Since then, it has served as a cornerstone for home and community-based services that support older adults. Through its funding and partnerships, the AAA has supported a strong network of senior service providers across the county, including Meals on Wheels of the Monterey Peninsula, Meals on Wheels of the Salinas Valley, Alliance on Aging, Alzheimer’s Association, Health Projects Center, Legal Services for Seniors, Loaves, Fishes, and Computers, the North County Recreation and Park District, and the Prunedale Senior Center. Together, these organizations deliver vital resources to seniors and caregivers. As our community grows and seniors live longer with increasingly complex needs, the demand for services continues to outpace available resources. The AAA remains committed to building partnerships, expanding capacity, and improving access to critical services for older adults, individuals with disabilities, caregivers, and their families. This Living Well, Aging and Disability Resource Guide is a testament to a strong partnership between the Monterey County Weekly and the AAA, providing a valuable tool for our community. On the Move After decades of teaching, Debby Norman is still serving her community and leading an active lifestyle. By Celia Jiménez Debby Norman, 77, is a long-time King City resident and a former schoolteacher. She worked in education for decades teaching kids how to read, write, do math and more. Now she likes to spend her time volunteering, making quilts and exercising. In 2024, she was recognized as Citizen of the Year by the King City Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture. Norman says she misses being in the classroom, but she nds her former students everywhere from the grocery store to the library or while volunteering. “I did get to teach children of my students, and that was the greatest reward ever,” she says. She was born in Honolulu, Hawaii where she spent the rst few years of her childhood before moving to California, where she has spent most of her life. She started her career as a teacher in Littlerock, near Palmdale, before moving to King City. Norman says she wanted to live near the ocean while her late husband preferred the mountains. “King City has neither,” she notes, but she fell in love with her students and how close-knit the community in King City is. And it clearly became home; moving away has never been part of her plans. “I’m not going to nd a better climate than King City,” Norman says. “I think it’s the jewel of South County.” e city has grown a lot since her move back in the 1970s, but its spirit hasn’t changed. “Taking care of your neighbor exists at every single level, in every single neighborhood,” she says. While she was working as an instructor, Norman found herself teaching younger and younger kids and she had a strong motivation: “I don’t ever want to see a child in middle school not really reading.” After retiring in 2006 she continued to substitute teach—in a return she says was not a job. “Subbing was a hobby,” she adds. Norman learned how to quilt after retiring and became hooked when she took a beginner class. She is now a member of Valley Heritage Quilt Guild, which includes quilters from througout the Salinas Valley. Besides quilting, she’s also a regular at Kasey’s Fitness Academy in King City, where she practices yoga and tai chi to keep t and socialize with others. “I don’t want to lose the ability to move,” she says. Norman also volunteers to drive neighbors to doctor appointments and ushers for the Monterey County Dance Foundation. She also enjoys writing. She often writes newsletter articles for her church and the Quilt Guild. “Volunteering gets to be fun,” Norman says, “because while you’re out there volunteering, you might nd one of your kids. Ahora le gusta dedicar su tiempo al voluntariado, a confeccionar colchas y a hacer ejercicio. En 2024, fue reconocida como ciudadana del año por la Cámara de Comercio y Agricultura de King City. Norman dice que extraña el aula, pero encuentra a sus antiguos estudiantes en todas partes: desde el supermercado hasta la biblioteca, e incluso mientras hace voluntariado. “Tuve la oportunidad de enseñar a los hijos de mis estudiantes y esa fue la mayor recompensa de todas”, dice. Nació en Honolulu, Hawái, donde pasó los primeros años de su infancia antes de mudarse a California, donde ha pasado la mayor parte de su vida. Comenzó su carrera como maestra en Littlerock, cerca de Palmdale, antes de mudarse a King City. Norman dice que quería vivir cerca del océano, mientras que su difunto esposo prefería las montañas. “King City no tiene ni uno ni lo otro”, señala, pero se enamoró de sus estudiantes y de lo unida que es la comunidad de King City. Y claramente se convirtió en su hogar; mudarse nunca ha sido parte de sus planes. “No voy a encontrar un ambiente mejor que el de King City”, dice Norman. “Creo que es la joya del sur del condado.” La ciudad ha crecido mucho desde que se mudó en los años 70, pero su espíritu no ha cambiado. “Cuidar de tu vecino existe en todos los niveles, en todos los vecindarios”, dice. Mientras trabajaba como instructora, Norman se encontró enseñando a niños cada vez más pequeños y tenía una fuerte motivación: “Nunca quiero ver a un niño en la secundaria que no sepa leer”. Después de jubilarse en 2006, continuó dando clases como sustituta, un regreso que dice que no era un trabajo. “Ser suplente era un pasatiempo”, añade. Norman aprendió a hacer colchas después de jubilarse y se enganchó cuando tomó una clase para principiantes. Ahora es miembro de la Valley Heritage Quilt Guild, que reúne a confeccionadoras de colchas de todo el Valle de Salinas. Además de hacer colchas, asiste regularmente a Kasey’s Fitness Academy en King City, donde practica yoga y tai chi para mantenerse en forma y socializar con otros. “No quiero perder la capacidad de moverme”, dice. Norman también hace voluntariado llevando a sus vecinos a citas médicas y como acomodadora en los eventos de la Monterey County Dance Foundation. También disfruta escribir. A menudo escribe artículos para el boletín de su iglesia y para el Gremio de Colchas. “Hacer voluntariado se vuelve divertido”, dice Norman, “porque mientras estás ahí, podrías encontrarte con uno de tus chicos”.
