Best Of Monterey County® ’26 ’26 Welcome to the Best Popularity is not difficult to gauge. Circus acts such as lion-taming that once attracted crowds have faded while hoop diving or aerial silk performances are now favorites. As you might surmise from the artwork, the theme for the 2026 edition of Best Of Monterey County® is the circus—perhaps appropriate for an election year. And no, that was not the reason. Instead, the circus has been a part of American culture since the nation’s early decades. Like the Best Of Monterey County®, the circus involves food, style, music, art and more. This year, readers voted for the best in 277 categories, ranging from Best Local Pet Store or Best Clergy to Best Huevos Rancheros. And yes, such polls amount to a popularity contest. For example, the selection of Best New Restaurant (see p. 83) did not yet have a kitchen as readers voted. However, locals know from the past just how good that team can—and will—be. So any of us are likely to disagree with the results here and there. We also include a number of Editors’ Picks. It’s our way to recognize some of the people, places and happenings that we believe deserve attention. After all, a skilled juggler working before small audiences can hardly compete with Cirque du Soleil. There was one other wrinkle as we went to press. Carmel’s approved street addresses finally became official. It was a scramble to change from “Mission between Ocean and 7th” to “649 Mission St.” We did our best to ensure that these are correct, although many businesses had yet to place address numbers. But that’s life at the circus—a bit unpredictable but always exciting. We hope you enjoy the Best Of Monterey County®. -Dave Faries 12 Around Town | 26 Arts & Entertainment | 42 Agriculture | 48 Shopping & Services |

montereycountynow.com/bestof BEST OF MONTEREY COUNTY® 2026 13 BEST RADIO STATION 101.7 The Beach 80 Garden Court, Monterey (831) 658-5200, 1017thebeach.com Just like the best circus performers, radio stations need a nickname. Aerial gymnast Lillian Leitzel was known as Dainty Miss Leitzel, for example. Human cannonball Rosa Richter took Zazel as her stage name. Those are OK, but KCDU nailed it with The Beach. They spin today’s hits by the likes of I-Yaz (another good nickname), PinkPantheress (yep) or Taylor Swift (not cutting it, nickname-wise, but musically…). This is music you want to hear at or near the beach. BEST RADIO DJ The Morning Madhouse KDON 102.5 FM 1550 Moffett St., C, Salinas (831) 755-8181, kdon.iheart.com Life’s a circus, people say. That means some amount of thrill, but also chaos. How are you going to summon the courage to do the trapeze while also taming a lion—while also getting your kid dressed for school, making coffee, preparing a healthy lunch and feeding the dog? Mornings are at least as complicated as the circus, and thank goodness we have The Morning Madhouse from 6-10am Mondays-Fridays to help power us through it. Sam Diggedy and Showbiz have the kind of clever, joyful banter (with lots of laughs) interspersed with high-energy hits to help pump you up to take on the high-wire act, and anything else the day throws your way. BEST LOCAL PODCAST KRML’s Pub Talk with Alvarado Street Brewery “Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, children of all ages...” These are the words that you’d want to hear at the beginning of any act and the one to announce them would be none other than the hosts of KRML’s Pub Talk with Alvarado Street Brewery: Jeff White and Kevin Wright. These guys are true ringleaders—Wright is a longtime homebrewer who recently turned pro—with friendly voices to ride the airwaves. And it’s nothing short of a modern miracle that they bring this bestest podcast to you from not one but three rotating locations across Monterey County. BEST SCHOOL BEST PROFESSOR - RENEE PENALVER BEST COLLEGE TEAM - WOMEN’S SOCCER CSU Monterey Bay 6013 General Jim Moore Blvd., Seaside (831) 582-3000, csumb.edu Adding new acts helps keep a circus and universities relevant. CSU Monterey Bay serves thousands of local students in the tri-county area. This year, it has new leadership with Carlos Vargas as interim president, new student housing and new programs for undergrads and graduates for the upcoming school year. Renee Penalver, an assistant psychology professor at CSUMB, doesn’t introduce acts in her classroom, but she’s its ringmaster, engaging and supporting her students and it shows because she won Best Professor for a second time in a row. Being a teammate is crucial in a circus itinerant’s life to produce a great performance. The women’s soccer team puts on great performances, particularly in recent years under head coach Laura VanWart. While the Otters may not win every match, their combined effort keeps them in every match. BEST K-12 TEACHER Beth Cina Forest Grove Elementary, 1065 Congress Ave., Pacific Grove (831) 236-7018, forestgrove.pgusd.org For the last 16 years, Beth Cina has been teaching second graders at Forest Grove Elementary School. With a total of 23 years of teaching experience both in the county and out of state, Cina does more than just teach, she asks the students every day how they are feeling and discusses any topic they wish to speak with her. She goes beyond the second grade curriculum and makes sure her students are prepared for any topic they wish to explore in the future, whether that be mathematics or juggling. BEST REAL ESTATE OFFICE Carmel Realty Company 745 Dolores St., Carmel (831) 622-1000, carmelrealtycompany. com When the circus rolled into town, the procession often included trailers to house the performers. These were temporary rigs, and not very comfortable—which is just the opposite of the type of housing Carmel Realty Company represents. And they are both prompt in response and reliable, which is why they are once again the readers’ choice for Best Real Estate Office. Carmel Realty Company can find you the perfect permanent big top. Around Town Best Realtor | J.R. Rouse Properties Group

14 BEST OF MONTEREY COUNTY® 2026 montereycountynow.com/bestof Around Town BEST REALTOR J.R. Rouse Properties Group 574 Lighthouse Ave., Pacific Grove (831) 318-3808 jrrouseproperties.com Whether you’re looking to sell your big top or buy your next, you’ll need an experienced real estate agent at your side to make the process as smooth as possible. J.R. Rouse and his team can help you find that perfect home to fit everything you need: a makeup room for the clowns, storage for the cannon and plenty of seating for the audience. If you don’t live at the circus, J.R. Rouse Properties Group specializes in homes across the Monterey Peninsula and surrounding areas. With 415 sales under their belts (and growing), these agents know what home is—with red and white stripes or otherwise. BEST PLACE TO WORK Montage Health 23625 Highway 68, Monterey (831) 624-5311, montagehealth.org Sometimes working in a busy hospital can feel like a three-ring circus. There’s a lot going on everywhere and all at once. Montage Health has a lot of other rings besides its hospital, Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula, including Montage Medical Group, Montage Urgent Care, Carol Hatton Breast Care Center, Montage Orthopedics and Sports Medicine, Ohana Center for Child and Adolescent Behavioral Health, Wellness Centers and more. And despite how demanding health care can be, Montage’s workforce has voted for Montage Health as the best place to work year after year since 2012. BEST LOCAL POLITICIAN U.S. Rep. Jimmy Panetta 1200 Aguajito Road, 3, Monterey (831) 424-2229, panetta.house.gov Rep. Jimmy Panetta, D-Carmel Valley, was a scholastic athlete—wrestling; no juggling or fire-eating teams in Monterey County. Yet Panetta is a performer through and through. He frequently flies to Washington, D.C. to that circus known as Congress, where he fights the ineptitude of the current federal administration while also juggling the needs of his Monterey Peninsula-centric congressional district with those of the the country. And yes, he deals with plenty of clowns. BEST LOCAL WEBSITE BEST LOCAL BLOG Montereycountynow.com When the barker announces, “Step right up...” you know there is something going on and you want to find out more. That is the role of the blog at montereycountynow.com (which is, of course, also the website). While everything put in print ends up online, there are more stories online than in the paper. From breaking news each time the Vistra battery storage site catches on fire to daily updates from IndyCar or the Pro-Am, there is a bit of everything people might want to know. The team at the Weekly use the blog and website to be in the now—and keep readers in the now. BEST CLERGY Father Peter Crivello St. Angela Merici 157 9th St., Pacific Grove (831) 655-4160, stangelamericapacificgrove.org Revival meetings often gather under circus-style tents. The performance of the minister is as much entertainment as salvation. Instead, locals have lauded Father Peter Crivello for keeping faith alive in the Central Coast region by focusing on salvation and engagement rather than purely entertaining frills. A Monterey native, Father Peter studied at Monterey Peninsula College and worked for the Social Security Administration before he was ordained into the priesthood in 1993. BEST VOLUNTEER ORGANIZATION BEST HEALTH NONPROFIT Meals on Wheels of the Monterey Peninsula 700 Jewell Ave., Pacific Grove (831) 375-4454, mowmp.org Meals on Wheels of the Monterey Peninsula isn’t in the business of hawking funnel cakes and peanuts. The food they make is much more nutritious, and their business has always been about getting that food to the most vulnerable locals. In 2025 alone, they delivered well over 725,000 meals and mobilized nearly 800 volunteers, totaling some 33,000 volunteer hours. Now that’s a big—and important—production. BEST LOCAL DO-GOODER Elsa Rivera The Big Top is a marvel unto itself—a huge circus venue that can fold up and travel to the next pop-up show. Elsa Rivera has that unrivaled type of Big Top energy, volunteering for one project and then packing up and moving on to the next, and she does it all with a warm smile. She’s involved with the many fundraisers and events behindthe-scenes, helping a team pull off the Best Boat Tour | Princess Monterey Whale Watching

She’s also willing to take the stage herself, as an emcee and a dancer and performer— and she volunteers doing surf therapy, too. That smile? Yes, it’s everywhere, whether audience-facing or doing the administrative work that makes these many community organizations go. BEST ANIMAL NONPROFIT SPCA Monterey County 1002 Highway 68, Salinas (831) 373-2631, spcamc.org A seal with a runny nose is not going to keep a ball balanced for long. At SPCA Monterey County, rescued animals have been treated well since 1905—not just cats and dogs, but any animal brought to them for help. So, yes, an acrobatic monkey would receive treatment. From making sure their health is great to looking spotless, every animal in SPCA’s care is ready to give a beautiful performance for their potential owner and all who are in their presence. BEST ARTS NONPROFIT Monterey Museum of Art 599 Pacific St., Monterey (831) 372-5477, montereyart.org One of the biggest museums in Monterey County, Monterey Museum of Art is all about entertainment. Keeping up with the spirit of the times, it stopped relying on the old museum formula. While one still can experience MMA as a contemplative museum and spend hours touring its attractive permanent collection, MMA is also about reaching out to the community. With the annual Block Party and a holiday installation, called Iluminado, Monterey’s main art museum is a beautifully illustrated adventure. BEST YOUTH NONPROFIT Rancho Cielo 710 Old Stage Road, Salinas (831) 444-3560, ranchocieloyc.org. A lot of talented people make the circus their career. But how do they learn the necessary skills? Who mentors them along the way and helps them find employment? Rancho Cielo is a nonprofit that invests in teens and young adults looking for opportunities and needing the skills. It is purposeful direction. Students can enroll in a variety of programs, including classic car restoration, welding and culinary arts. At Rancho Cielo, the future begins now. BEST ENVIRONMENT NONPROFIT BEST PLACE TO TAKE VISITORS Monterey Bay Aquarium 886 Cannery Row, Monterey (831) 648-4800, montereybayaquarium.org Ringling Bros., an American circus institution, retired its live animal acts in 2018. But luckily for locals and visitors to Monterey County, there are ample opportunities to enjoy the grace and acrobatics of the globe’s most majestic creatures—without them being trained or forced. The Monterey Bay Aquarium’s enduring commitment to not only the animals in its care, but also as a do-gooding ringleader for our shared ocean ecosystem, shows why it ranks as the perennial choice for Best Place to Take Visitors but also the Best Environment Nonprofit in Monterey County. 16 BEST OF MONTEREY COUNTY® 2026 montereycountynow.com/bestof 1-4s 4.6” x 4.94” FREE ACTIVITIES INSIDE Monterey Peninsula Regional Park District LET’S GO OUTDOORS! Around Town BEST LOCAL EVENT/FESTIVAL Monterey Jazz Festival Monterey County Fair & Event Center, 2004 Fairground Road, Monterey (831) 373-3366, montereyjazz.org Circuses are famous for shows “under the big top,” but sometimes they were performed “under the stars,” meaning without a tent. The Monterey Jazz Festival has been performing under the stars since it was created in 1958, hosting some of the biggest jazz stars of the day, including Billie Holiday, Louis Armstrong and Dizzy Gillespie. The festival became one of the most prestigious jazz festivals in the country, a place for all the greats and up-and-coming greats to perform for grateful jazz fans. MJF Managing Director Bobbie Young says one reason the festival is beloved is because it’s a chance for many patrons to reunite with friends they’ve made at the annual festival. “We’re family and people love that,” she says. BEST FOOD EVENT Carmel Culinary Week carmelculinaryweekevents.com Carmel Culinary Week is unique. With a full week of events and celebrations ranging from casual and self-guided options to more grand and flashy spectacles, there is something for everyone. And they do this without a midway. This exceptional culinary circus is the perfect way to experience the full extent of Carmel’s food and beverage offerings, for natives and out-of-towners alike. BEST BUSINESS SIGN Old Fisherman’s Grotto 39 Old Fisherman’s Wharf, Monterey (831) 375-4604, oldfishermansgrotto.com Walking down Old Fisherman’s Wharf in Monterey can feel a bit like a circus midway with its colorful and wonky buildings and business signs working to lure in potential customers. Exhibit A: the artful neon-lettered sign above the historic Old Fisherman’s Grotto, opened in 1950 by Sabu Shake and currently owned by his son Chris. The sign is a clue that what waits for you under the tent—or roof, in this case—is going to be memorable. BEST PLACE TO PICK UP THE WEEKLY The library Did you know P.T. Barnum’s career as a showman extended well beyond popularizing the circus? He also used his showmanship for purposes of the public good, like parading 21 elephants and 17 camels across the Brooklyn Bridge to prove that it was stable. And he was also a newspaper guy, starting his career as publisher of the Herald of Freedom in Connecticut. We only know this stuff thanks to the library, whichever branch you frequent—there are county, city and academic libraries. Whether you’re looking for a copy of the latest edition of the Monterey County Weekly, an archived article from a 1988 Weekly or trying to learn some trivia about Barnum, your local library has you covered. BEST NEON SIGN Dust Bowl Brewing Co. 290 Figueroa St., Monterey (831) 641-7002, dustbowlbrewing.com A neon sign is a static manifestation of the circus barker, drawing you in. The sign at Dust Bowl Brewing Co. gives any multicolored flashbulb-adorned display of words a run for its money. What makes our readers go “ooo” and “ahhh” is this feature stretching across the old train station in Monterey. Even if the stop was unscheduled, a circus train would pull to a stop here, first for human passengers to marvel at the neon glow that tells guests where the fun is about to be had. And then to step inside for a few beers. BEST HOTEL Monterey Plaza Hotel & Spa 400 Cannery Row, Monterey (831) 920-6710, montereyplazahotel.com Circus Circus Las Vegas opened in 1968 as one of the first family-friendly casinos on the Strip, with a casino on the first floor and carnival games for children on the second. 20 BEST OF MONTEREY COUNTY® 2026 montereycountynow.com/bestof Around Town performances of feats of strength. At Monterey Plaza Hotel & Spa you’ll find no high-flying acts or amusing clowns, just a luxurious hotel with excellent service and stellar views of Monterey Bay and its wildlife. It includes an outstanding restaurant, Coastal Kitchen, led by Executive Chef Michael Rotondo, as well as the more casual Schooners Monterey, which all help to explain why readers said Monterey Plaza Hotel & Spa is the best. There is no entertainment center necessary. BEST PLACE TO DRINK NEXT TO A CELEBRITY Mission Ranch 26270 Dolores St., Carmel (831) 625-9040, missionranchcarmel.com Here’s a recipe for a fun night out: An energetic piano bar, an inviting indoor/outdoor setting with iconically pastoral views on 22 acres (with grazing sheep, not parading elephants), an origin story involving movie star (and former mayor) Clint Eastwood and recent special events featuring musicians who played with the likes of The Rolling Stones, The Monkees and Alicia Keys (that was just a Wednesday night). Given those credentials, it should be no surprise to see a circus star (or any star) sidling up to the bar, or up to the piano to belt out a tune— listen for the people who can sing too well even after they’ve had a couple of drinks. BEST PLACE TO SEE AND BE SEEN Old Monterey Farmers Market Alvarado Street, Monterey (831) 655-2607, oldmonterey.org As the wise Britney Spears famously said, “All eyes on me in the center of the ring, just like a circus,” and for many, that circus is the Old Monterey Farmers Market. The wide variety of local vendors has a special way of bringing the people out into the “ring” Tuesdays 4-8pm in season. Whether you are stocking up on groceries, buying locally made handicrafts, eating freshly made bites, or simply strolling, you will surely see and be seen. BEST PLACE TO GET MARRIED Lovers Point Ocean View Boulevard and 17th Street, Pacific Grove (831) 648-3100, cityofpacificgrove.org Marriage is like a trapeze act: each person relies on the other to make it work. The opening act of the performance—marriage or trapeze—is just as important as the middle and end, so why not start it off right? Lovers Point is one of the most popular spots for couples to tie the knot in Monterey County, and for good reason. The ocean views, iconic outcrops and plenty of amenities make it an all-in-one location. BEST PLACE FOR A BIRTHDAY PARTY MY Museum 425 Washington St., Monterey (831) 649-6444, mymuseum.org Any parent will admit wrangling as few as three young kids can quickly become, well, a circus. MY Museum can specifically wrangle and entertain up to 50 (kids and adults), while also throwing a birthday party. The staff is well prepared for kids ages 2-10, blocking off private play hours, preparing goodie bags, setting up furniture, and more. For the second consecutive year, local parents have voted that it’s best to leave it to MY. BEST PLACE TO EAVESDROP Alvarado Street Brewery 426 Alvarado St., Monterey. (831) 655-2337 Carmel Plaza, 526 Ocean Ave., Carmel. (831) 293-8621 301 Main St., Salinas. (831) 356-0219 asb.beer The only thing that really silences an audience go silent is the drum roll before daredevil act. That’s because, people are having fun, sharing stories and people watching—all of which (minus the drum roll and daredevil) is Alvarado Street Brewery, making it the perfect place to eavesdrop. It’s a gathering spot and a happy place, with great beer (of course), food and even cocktails. So there is a lot going on. BEST PUBLIC GOLF COURSE Pacific Grove Golf Links 77 Asilomar Blvd., Pacific Grove (831) 648-5775, playpacificgrove.com They call Pacific Grove Golf Links the “poor person’s Pebble Beach Golf Links.” But that’s like comparing Cirque du Soleil to Cirque Medrano. Both are bucket lists when it comes to coastal scenery, it’s just that it becomes quite a bit easier on the credit line to play Pacific Grove on a regular basis rather than Pebble Beach. And with dunes and beach grasses, Pacific Grove is much more comparable to a true Scottish links—particularly on the back nine. The par 72 layout can be more punishing on the front nine, with clusters of cypress trees coming into play. So it’s not a favorite because Best Place to Drink Next to a Celebrity | Mission Ranch

Around Town the course goes easy on golfers. This is simply a challenging and beautiful place for a round—or two, three, whatever—of golf. BEST SURF SPOT BEST PLACE TO WATCH THE SUNSET Asilomar State Beach Sunset Drive, Pacific Grove (831) 646-6440, parks.ca.gov Unlike the northern end of Monterey Bay, finding good surf spots and places to watch the sunset is not difficult in Monterey County. But sunset seekers and surfers can find everything they’re seeking at Asilomar State Beach. The roughly one-mile strip of sand and rocky coves has a few spots that can accommodate surfers of all ability levels but can be dangerous for swimmers due to cold water and rip currents. Because of its location on the west side of the Monterey Peninsula, it’s one of the best places to watch the sun disappear behind the horizon. BEST PARK Point Lobos State Natural Reserve Highway 1, Carmel (831) 624-4909, parks.ca.gov If we were to ask ourselves, “Why do we choose to go to something so wild and out there” as the circus?, the answer may simply be: to be mesmerized. Point Lobos State Natural Reserve, with all of its spectacular beauty and wonders, is where people go in Monterey County to be mesmerized by the natural beauty that surrounds them. It can be as breathtaking as watching a tightrope act, one without a net. Known as “the crown jewel of the California State Park System,” Point Lobos has also won Best Park—a testament to its otter-filled coves, sparkling waters and rolling meadows along the rugged coastline. BEST PLACE TO BIKE / MOUNTAIN BIKE Fort Ord National Monument Various entrances in Seaside, Salinas and Marina (831) 582-2200, blm.gov We would never advise to ride a bike on a tightrope—that’s best left to the professionals. Instead, the next best thing is to hit the trails at Fort Ord National Monument. Try Trail 93 (that area is called Little Moab for a reason) or ride Sandstone Ridge Road, high above the valley below. It’s just like being on a tightrope—the views, the adrenaline—without the fear of death. Well, there is the chance of injury, like anything involving mountain biking, so please, stick to the trails. BEST HIKING TRAIL Garland Ranch Regional Park 700 W. Carmel Valley Road, Carmel Valley (831) 659-6065, mprpd.org Hiking trails abound at Garland Ranch Regional Park in Carmel Valley and many of them veer vertical pretty quickly. If you prefer to stay low and not huff up the ridge, meadows and wildflowers await on the valley floor and gentle, dog-friendly trails loop throughout. Monterey Peninsula Regional Parks District offers hiking, birding, workshops and family programming with schedules available in their Let’s Go Outdoors! catalogs published twice a year. BEST BOAT TOUR Princess Monterey Whale Watching 96 Old Fisherman’s Wharf, Monterey (831) 372-2203, montereywhalewatching. com Step right up! Impressively huge! See these amazing animals and feats of strength! Like the bulging strongmen and towering giants of the turn-ofthe-century circus, the wonders of the Monterey Bay draw big crowds yearround to its marine carnival. Princess Monterey Whale Watching acts as a seasoned ringmaster, giving tourists and locals a front-row seat for sightings of acrobatic sea birds, clowning seals and the main attraction: whales. Princess Monterey Whale Watching boasts a 99 percent success rate to witness nature’s biggest spectacle. 22 BEST OF MONTEREY COUNTY® 2026 montereycountynow.com/bestof 8TH & LINCOLN, CARMEL-BY-THE-SEA (831) 624-1588 | CARMELFOUNDATION.ORG NEW: WELLNESS CENTER Weights | Cardio | Fitness Classes 65+ WEEKLY PROGRAMS Fitness | Arts | Lectures | Cards | Movies NUTRITIOUS MEALS $6 Meals | On-Site | Grab & Go | Curbside | Homebound Delivery SUPPORT SERVICES Resources | Referrals | Medical Equipment | Affordable Housing Membership is open to adults 55 and older — no matter where you live. Around Town BEST BEACH Carmel Beach Ocean Avenue and Scenic Road, Carmel You don’t need a circus barker to convince you to visit Carmel Beach, it’s just that picturesque. Known as one of the most scenic destinations in Carmel, this beach is an iconic spot for both locals and tourists to enjoy the gentle breeze along the Pacific Ocean. Taking up just one mile, the whitesand beach has an adjacent scenic walking path that allows visitors of all ages to fully take in the panoramic views. And it’s the most dog-friendly beach in Monterey County. We’re not sure about the policy on circus monkeys. BEST LIBRARY Monterey Public Library 625 Pacific St., Monterey (831) 646-3933, monterey.gov/library. Going to the library feels like sticking your hand into a magician’s hat. Sometimes patrons get what’s expected and at first sight, like books, computers and magazines. Other times, they have to dig deeper and find an array of workshops and activities for all ages, from learning a new craft to checking out cooking equipment to getting new seeds to cultivate veggies or flowers. Libraries are not old hat. They have pretty much everything. BEST HANGOUT FOR TEENS Del Monte Shopping Center 1410 Del Monte Center, Monterey (831) 373-2705, delmontecenter.com It’s no secret that a group of bored teenagers can turn your household into a three-ring circus. Luckily, Del Monte Shopping Center has nearly 60 years experience ringleading even the most distractable teens. Act one: all the clothing, shoes and accessory shops you need for a proper fit check. Act two: pretzel dippers, pizza and chocolates. Act three: the requisite scented candle and body-spray purchase. Final act: you and your besties showing off your haul for the gram. BEST HANGOUT FOR SENIORS Carmel Foundation 8th and Lincoln, Carmel (831) 624-1588, carmelfoundation.org There’s no downtime at Carmel Foundation. On any day, there might be yoga, a book club discussion, a hike being organized, group singing, a photography class and a wood carving workshop—all before lunch, which is as good as most Carmel restaurants, only less expensive. In a way, Carmel Foundation is as engaging as a circus, with its firebreathers, clowns, trapeze artists and other acts to attract your attention, except that the offerings reach all interests, from cards to chess to impressionist painting, line dancing or much-needed personal support. It’s an organization that makes certain that seniors are active and engaged. BEST SENIOR LIVING COMMUNITY Carmel Valley Manor 8545 Carmel Valley Road, Carmel (831) 624-1281, cvmanor.com After you have run away to join the circus, where do you go next? For another year, Carmel Valley Manor ranks as the region’s Best Senior Living Community. When you’re ready to hang up the sequined leotards and ringleader’s whip, this age 60+ residential community offers serene living and a variety of marquee activities like lawn bowling and flower arranging. And while elephants and monkeys won’t be roaming the picturesque grounds, trained dogs (as well as cats) are welcome. 24 BEST OF MONTEREY COUNTY® 2026 montereycountynow.com/bestof Reservations up to 60 days IN ADVANCE. ’12 ’11 ’13 ’14 RECOGNIZED BY GOLF DIGEST AS ONE OF THE “BEST DEALS IN GOLF” 77 ASILOMAR BLVD, PACIFIC GROVE • 831.648.5775 • www.playpacificgrove.com • Best Public Golf Course ’16 ’15 ’18 ’17 ’24 ’25 ’26 ’20 ’19 ’23 ’22 PG-GolfLinks_1-2h_BO26_dg.indd 1 9/14/26 12:46

montereycountynow.com/bestof BEST OF MONTEREY COUNTY® 2026 27 BEST LATE-NIGHT HANGOUT Pearl Hour 214 Lighthouse Ave., Monterey (831) 657-9447, pearlhour.com The circus after dark features a provocative and risqué lineup featuring cabarets, vaudeville performances and maybe even some aerial acrobatics. Such would be a little tough to pull off at Pearl Hour, but somehow it happens. Frequent jazz performances, drag shows and burlesque acts and musical happenings are all what’s in store here, along with fantastical craft cocktails from the finest ingredients, many of which are hand-sourced by owner Katie Blandin herself. Even on nights when there isn’t a show happening, it’s still a lovely place to hang out at the bar or by the fire pit on the back patio and enjoy the company of friends. BEST BAR FOR BOOMERS Sardine Factory 701 Wave St., Monterey (831) 373-3775, sardinefactory.com Sardine Factory’s bar is small but mighty, packing a lot of good drinks and fun into one sweet spot where boomers are entertained by longtime favorite Dave Conley at the piano on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. On Sunday evenings is pianist and singer TJ Kuenster, longtime musical director for Glen Campbell. Between the two musicians, it’s a boomers paradise of classic rock hits and, despite the tight space, it’s not uncommon for spontaneous dance parties to break out. BEST BAR FOR GEN X BEST NEIGHBORHOOD BAR (TIE) Hops and Fog Brewing Co. 511 Lighthouse Ave., Pacific Grove. (831) 215-1658, hopsandfog.beer It was the Gen Xers who grew to appreciate authenticity in style and ingredients, abandoning the American cheese, TV dinners and pale lager that were the norm. Yet because they experienced the onset of digital technology, it’s a generation comfortable with change and fusion. Like stale traditional circuses gave way to the complexities of Cirque du Soleil, they adapted to more global and modern ways. Which leads them to Hops and Fog, with its ever-changing lineup of beers and the brewmaster’s willingness to both stay true to tradition (a classic altbier, for example) and play with beer genres. The brewpub’s food menu has a similar vibe, with seasonal elements, but also old-school bar fare (anchovies). All that said, Hops and Fog is not exclusive to Gen X. It has a comfortable feel, with a friendly staff and local regulars that makes it feel like a neighborhood fixture. BEST BAR FOR MILLENNIALS BEST SELECTION OF CRAFT BEER Alvarado Street Brewery 426 Alvarado St., Monterey. (831) 655-2337 Ocean and Mission, Carmel. (831) 293-8621 301 Main St., Salinas. (831) 356-0219 asb.beer Three rings? Try almost 20. That’s the number of beers on tap on any given day at Alvarado Street locations. And variety extends beyond just the tap count. Light or dark, hoppy or sour, traditional or a bit off the wall—they brew it or stock it. One can even take home a favorite in cans. This is part of what makes Alvarado Street a favorite of millennials, who came of drinking age as the craft beer craze hit full stride. They expect creative beers brewed with care, and the team at Alvarado Street wins gold medals at both state and national beer competitions. And let’s face it—like the unfortunate circus clown for whom nothing goes right, millennials started entering the workforce just as the economy was tanking. They needed a good beer, and still do. BEST BAR FOR GEN Z BEST NEIGHBORHOOD BAR (TIE) Other Brother Beer Co. 877 Broadway Ave., Seaside (831) 747-1106, otherbrotherbeer.com When P.T. Barnum first began welcoming crowds, some of the attractions Arts & Entertainment Best Museum | Pacific Grove Museum of Natural History

28 BEST OF MONTEREY COUNTY® 2026 montereycountynow.com/bestof Arts & Entertainment were Tom Thumb, whose size was due to dwarfism, the Bearded Lady, conjoined twins and a man suffering from microcephaly. Known at the time as “freaks,” they would be welcomed by members of Gen Z, a generation noted for its inclusive nature. This emphasis on diversity—and of valuing socializing and experiences over an alcoholic bender—brings them to Other Brother. Not only does the brewpub serve a range of beers, there are ciders, slushies and non-alcoholic options. Other Brother also hosts trivia, bingo and other fun gatherings—which makes it an enjoyable spot for locals to hang out and share a moment. There is something for everyone here. BEST DRINK WITH A VIEW Monterey Beach Hotel 2600 Sand Dunes Drive, Monterey (831) 394-3321, montereybeach.com “Under the stars” refers both to a circus performed without a tent and also Monterey County’s preferred way to enjoy a beverage. While there is plenty of local competition for outdoor imbibing, readers have chosen Monterey Beach Hotel as the top spot. Visit and the reason is immediately obvious. The beach, the crashing waves—it’s all right in front of you. And there are firepits outside, where staff will bring drinks to you (seasonally). Let’s just say the hotel is aptly named and the readers have voted wisely. BEST PLACE FOR DAY-DRINKING Dust Bowl Brewing Co. 290 Figueroa St., Monterey (831) 641-7002, dustbowlbrewing.com The traveling circus predated the Dust Bowl, when traveling in search of something better became a norm for millions of Americans. Luckily, we’ve found that better place, and it is right here at the inviting communal picnic table seating on the patio of Dust Bowl Brewing Company. With 24 taps offering a rotation of this brewery’s crisp, easy-drinking beers, the menu is full of crowd-pleasers (plus, there is a permanent food truck on site). The patio overlooks the Monterey Bay Recreation Trail, which can be a real sideshow, making for some fun people-watching during the day. BEST BAR FOR DARTS The Otter’s Den 3166 Vista Del Camino Circle, Marina (831) 883-1227, bar831.com Many people will never have the chance to take part in a high-thrill act like the Wheel of Death, but adventure seekers can surely enjoy a less deadly game like darts. Here in Monterey County, the Great Throwdini and bar-hoppers alike can enjoy a friendly game of darts at The Otter’s Den, Marina’s go-to spot for great drinks, good vibes and so much more. Visitors are welcome to bring in takeout from local eateries, all while also enjoying a great spot for MLB Extra and NFL Sunday games. BEST HAPPY HOUR BEST SPECIALTY COCKTAILS Hula’s Island Grill 622 Lighthouse Ave., Monterey (831) 655-4852, hulastiki.com Perhaps not entirely by accident, but the golden era of the circus—think peak Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey—also coincided with one of the darkest eras of U.S. history: Prohibition. Luckily, it’s 2026. Alcohol isn’t illegal, and drinking is encouraged roughly during the hours of 4-6pm, every day at Hula’s with their unbeatable Happy Hour. They make classic tiki drinks—like your Mai Tais, Zombies and Pain Killers— with punchy fresh juices, so it really is a mini-vacation. Feeling a double? Hula’s doesn’t even ask, and they have both prices on the menu. BEST PUB Crown & Anchor 150 W. Franklin St., Monterey (831) 649-6496, crownandanchor.net Crown & Anchor has all the qualities of a good British pub, including a welcoming atmosphere, plenty of brews on tap, cocktails for those who don’t imbibe beer, eye-catching objects on the wall and a menu that suits all of the above. With a traditional bar, outdoor patio, friendly staff and a rotating cast of congenial regulars, after one visit you’ll understand what they mean when they say, “You will be a stranger here but once.” BEST DIVE BAR Alfredo’s Cantina 266 Pearl St., Monterey (831) 238-3082 Some days, we need a drink. For circus performers, they might need to quench their thirst after breathing fire. (For some of us, if we’re being honest, it’s just been one of those days, no circus tricks involved.) Wherever you are coming from, Alfredo’s is a no-pretense dive bar with dim lighting that immediately soothes you. This cash-only watering hole isn’t judging. BEST PLACE TO SHOOT POOL Easy Street Billiards 511 Tyler St., Monterey (831) 333-0825, montereybilliards.com Ringmasters have a cane. Billiards players have a cue. They both serve a critical purpose: For ringmasters, the cane accentuates their over-the-top costumes, and the gaudier the outfit, the better the show. For billiards, the cue is what makes everything go. Easy Street Billiards is a classic billiards joint, where players compete in tournaments, grab a beer, watch a game and just have a good time around the bright green tables. Ever seen a ringmaster play a game of pool? Just bring the outfit—the sticks are provided. BEST VENUE FOR ROCK BEST PLACE FOR COMEDY Golden State Theatre 417 Alvarado St., Monterey (831) 649-1070, goldenstatetheatre.com Should the Led Zeppelin tribute band The Flying Circus visit Monterey County, there would only be one place to play: Golden State Theatre. The historic downtown Monterey venue celebrates a century of performances this year and never fails to please an audience. Musicians from around the world have stepped onto this stage to showcase their talents. But it’s not just for music. Some of the nation’s best comedians also use this platform—and not for lowbrow stunts like boutonnieres that spray water or pies to the face. This is for the standout standups. BEST VENUE FOR JAZZ Monterey County Fairgrounds 2004 Fairgrounds Road, Monterey (831) 372-5863, montereycountyfair.com In 1947 the famous French artist Henri Matisse created a colorful book of prints that was originally supposed to be named “Le Cirque” because of a continuing theme of featuring circus performers, but as he added new non-circus images, the title was changed to The Circus, from Jazz. The Monterey County Fairgrounds, which has hosted a lot of circuses during its long history, has also been the main location for the Monterey Jazz Festival for nearly 70 years, bringing in the best of the best in jazz annually to perform for audiences that hail from around the world. All the best jazz musicians have made historic appearances at the fairgrounds and continue to do so. If the best of the best are flocking to the Monterey County Fairgrounds, it makes sense it’s the readers’ choice for Best Venue for Jazz. BEST VENUE FOR BLUES Deja Blue 500 Broadway Ave., Seaside (831) 324-0044, dejabluelive.com One of the most famous clowns in circus history, Emmett Kelly, created the sad clown known as “Weary Willy.” Sad clowns gave people who were down on their luck or going through hard times a way to feel better about their situations, if only for a moment. Blues music has a similar goal, to share pain through music as a way to find comfort. In Monterey County the place to find blues throughout the year is at Deja Blue in Seaside. The club brings in blues artists for performances, as well as serving as a comedy club, soul food restaurant and bar. BEST SINGLES BAR Barmel 668 San Carlos St., Carmel (831) 626-3400, barmel.com Bars in Monterey County are usually part of something else—hotel bars, restaurant bars, wine bars. Not many of them will transform into a bit of a club after 8pm, but Barmel accepts the challenge. With its cabaret vibe and intimate space in the heart of romantic Carmel, Barmel attracts the young and curious—those passing through and locals. Clowns—yes, probably a few. But also strongmen and women doing high-flying ballet to the music. BEST SPORTS BAR Peter B’s 2 Portola Plaza, Monterey (831) 649-2699, portolahotel.com If sports bars had been around in oldtime circus days, the Flying Wallendas would be performing on one screen, Strongman Arthur Saxon would be hefting heavy things on another. After all, those guys were athletes. But if that’s not your thing these days, the brewpub Peter B’s offers football, auto racing, baseball, basketball, hockey— you name it—on 25 high-definition screens around the bar and dining Best Bar for Darts | The Otter’s Den
