It was purpose-built to challenge for the inaugural Pebble Beach Road Races, where Sterling Edwards won his class, but finished 14th overall. However, the car brought home a second prize: Best of Show at the first Concours d’Elegance. Through its first five years, the Concours showcased new cars. In 1953, for instance, judges celebrated an Austin Healey 100 from that year—much to the dismay of the owner of a sleek Ferrari 212 Inter Coupé, who hopped in his car and tore off the field, leaving deep ruts. But for 1955, Concours officials decided to select classics—racing legend Phil Hill’s 1931 Pierce-Arrow 41 LeBaron took Best of Show, changing the nature of such concours events. The road races were actually the featured draw at the time, with Concours a Saturday sideshow. But the series ended in tragedy in 1956 with a fatal crash. Motorsports moved to Laguna Seca and Concours d’Elegance continued as a spring event, not moving to August until 1967. Concours d’Elegance celebrates its 75th occasion in 2026 (rain washed out the 1960 event). For decades it was the sole automotive attraction. And at times it was a struggle to maintain. But in 1972 new co-chairs Lorin Tryon and “J” Heumann set a higher standard for quality. Bob Devlin, a Concours judge and author of Pebble Beach: A Matter of Style, a history of the early races and Concours d’Elegance, credits those two, as well as current co-chair Sandra Button, for transforming the event. Button, who came on board in 2002, is stepping down following this year’s edition. In 1974 the first Monterey Historics—now the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion—took place at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca. By 1990 an auction and the Blackhawk Exposition joined the lineup, making for a full weekend. As the following list illustrates, Car Week has grown dramatically since then, with multiple car shows, auctions, parties and more. We present this guide as a navigational aid. Free events are noted.
