Sunday, March 30 RAINBOW CONNECTION There are those—call them what you will—who insist there are just two genders. And then there is reality, inconvenient to some though it may be. Those additional letters in the acronym that begins with LGB, those folks know how to put on a good time and make the world (or the Salinas Valley part of it) a better and more colorful place. Paint in the Park is a chance for people of all ages to share in art activities and community painting projects while also sharing a transgender day of visibility. It’s also a chance to wield positivity in the face of hate. [DF] Noon-2pm Sunday, March 30. Central Park, 420 Central Ave., Salinas. Free. info@salinasvalleypride.com, salinasvalleypride.com. FANTASTIC SCHOLASTIC Cooking from some of the Peninsula’s top chefs. Glasses brimming with favorite local wines or beers. If only school had been like this. But you can sample some great dishes and drink fine wines while still making the grade—or rather, helping today’s students make the grade. Great Taste of P.G. is the most important fundraiser of the year for the nonprofit PG P.R.I.D.E (Public Response In Dollars for Education), which turns your gourmet habits into funds for learning materials, musical instruments, field trips and much more at PGUSD schools. So eat, drink and be scholarly. [DF] 4-7pm Sunday, March 30. The Inn at Spanish Bay, 2700 17-Mile Drive, Pebble Beach. $100. 884-8818, supportpgpride.com. PARTY ON “I cantori” is Italian for “the singers,” a fitting name for the choral group I Cantori di Carmel. But that is not stopping the nonprofit from hopping over to France for inspiration for its annual spring fundraiser, billed as “Riviera Rendevous.” Enjoy some bubbly, French-inspired appetizers and of course music (in this case, performed by Dave Dally and Mike Marotta). Feel free to dress as your favorite French movie star for a theme described as “coastal chic meets vintage cool”—is that French?—and prepare to be dazzled by a little je ne sais quoi. [SR] 4pm Sunday, March 30. Carmel Woman’s Club, 9th Avenue at San Carlos Street, Carmel. $60. 644-8012, icantori.org. IN THE BOOK Organizing your pile of photos into a cohesive form can be challenging, especially if you are trying to publish a book. For those who are struggling with it and want to get tips and feedback on how to start this journey, Carolyn Drake leads a workshop titled “The Photo Book from the Artist’s Perspective.” The event is part of the month-long festival PhotoCarmel (see story, p. 34). Drake has published several photo books and shares insights on making your own, from brainstorming to publication, including the difference between self-publishing and working with publishers. Attendees should bring printed photos. [CJ] 9am-5pm Sunday, March 30. Sunset Center (Babcock Room), 9th Avenue at San Carlos Street, Carmel. $350; space is limited. 6255181, photography.org. HOT PICKS you’re that far down the line to inherit a fortune? For Monty Navarro, being a gentleman with ambitions, he just assists his relatives with their deaths, one by one. It’s all in good fun in A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder, a Tony Award-winning comedic musical presented by Paper Wing Theatre. The show made its Broadway debut in 2013, enjoying a two-year run. Before you witness the series of “accidents,” enjoy a pre-show dinner at Paper Wing. Staged murder is better witnessed on a full stomach. [EC] 6pm (dinner), 8pm (show) Fridays-Saturdays, and 1:30pm (lunch) and 3pm (show) Sundays, March 28-April 19. Paper Wing Theatre & Supper Club, 711 Cannery Row, Suite I (upstairs), Monterey. $79/dinner and show; $35/show only. 905-5684, paperwing.com. Saturday, March 29 KICKING IT Monterey Bay FC returns home to host Phoenix on Saturday after blanking Orange County 3-0. After back-toback wins on the young season, the Union are in second place in the USL Championship Western Conference behind San Antonio. The Union have been on a tear to start the 2025 campaign. After a loss to start the season, the team has blasted six goals in their last two league games, led by newcomer Ilijah Paul, who has planted four balls in the back of the net. Including MBFC’s US Open Cup win, the team has scored 11 goals in all competitions so far this year, while conceding just three. [DF] 7pm Saturday, March 29. Cardinale Stadium, 4111 2nd Ave., Seaside. $20-$55. montereybayfc.com. TINY STAGEWORKS Sometimes a play is drawn out over hours, with a necessary intermission. Sometimes, one act delivers a lot in just a little time. A small, local theater company, Soapbox Stageworks, is now showing Winter One Acts, staging the following plays: Ruby by Donald Loftus, when an afternoon on the Thames takes a turn; Forward Pass by Lawson Caldwell, about two mothers who are called to the principal’s office to decide about their sons’ future; Lenny and Jenny by Mike Byham, in which a tough situation makes two opposites realize that things are not always as they seem; and A Winter’s Eve by the Soapbox founder Karen Devaney, about a married couple struggling with their marital problems during a snowy night in a cabin. [AP] 7pm Saturday, March 29. Carl Cherry Center for the Arts, 4th and Guadalupe, Carmel. $35. 624-7491, soapboxstageworks.org. SPOOKY WAGONS Alejandro Rose-Garcia, more commonly known as Shakey Graves, walks a smooth line between bluegrass, folk, country and rock and roll—his music often falls in the “Americana” genre. He’s perhaps best known for songs like “Tomorrow” or “Roll The Bones,” the latter of which was self-released on his debut solo album, Roll The Bones. His signature style typically consists of just him, his guitar, a tambourine, and—famously in the past—a modified Brian Steen-Larsen plays the anti-hero Monty Navarro in A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder. Hilarity ensues as he’s caught in the middle of a love triangle with Sibella (left, portrayed by Sarah Gaudoin) and Phoebe (Katelyn Michelle). SARAH GAUDOIN Trumpeter Chris Botti will play at Sunset Center in Carmel. Among other achievements, he composed the music for movies The Bucket List (2007), August Rush (2007) and Caught (1996).
