www.montereycountynow.com FEBRUARY 27-MARCH 5, 2025 MONTEREY COUNTY WEEKLY 23 CULTURE A good song will often reveal a hidden truth. And it may come with a melody that you will listen to once, twice, too many times. Lol Tolhurst, co-founder of the iconic post-punk era band The Cure, has crafted many such songs in his 45-year career. Lately, though, when it comes to revelation, he has taken to long form. At 66, Tolhurst now crafts his truths as a book writer. “I think that a lot of stuff in my life was very prevalent in my youth, all the way through my 20s,” he says. “And then there’s this period where things sort of go along. I’ve discovered some kind of magic again.” Tolhurst will host an intimate conversation at the Henry Miller Library in Big Sur on Saturday, March 1. While inspired by his 2023 memoir Goth, he describes this event as a premiere of its kind: more intense than attending a bookstore Q&A, but less so than flashing lights, smoke and dry ice. “Somewhere in between,” says the percussionist and keyboardist with a smile. Addressing the differences between songwriting and memoir writing—he already has about 80 pages of a third book—Tolhurst notes it is a remarkably similar creative process. “I can remember all the most beautiful lines in books, because that’s the thing that excites me,” he explains. “Same with songs. You know, the way that music goes into something, and then there’s a thought that comes out and it’s just breathtaking. That, to me, is the whole artistic journey, right there.” The event will feature music from harpist Mary Lattimore, who appeared with Tolhurst on his 2023 album Los Angeles. Lattimore, who met Tolhurst at a party in Los Angeles, says that their collaboration started out with her being a huge fan. “I just couldn’t believe that an original founding member of the best band in the world was standing in front of me,” she says. For Tolhurst, it is a mutual appreciation: “I never thought in a million years I would be a big harp fan. But I’m a big Mary fan.” In addition to recalling good old memories, Tolhurst also hopes to create new ones. “To finish a chapter, or to finish some part of the book that was important to me is very special, so I’m going to keep doing it as long as I’m on this Earth,” he says.
