Thursday, Feb. 27 MARY IN MARINA If you like anime (hand-drawn and computer-generated animation that originated in Japan), this film is for you. Based on British writer Mary Steward’s 1971 book titled The Little Broomstick, Mary and the Witch’s Flower, this 2017 fantasy movie tells the story of Mary Smith, a curious red-haired girl who moves to her aunt’s house in North England. After an initial period of boredom, local cats help Mary find a mysterious glowing flower that will eventually get her to college. When the book was published in 1971, Disney bought the film rights right away, but the movie never went to production. Now we can see a Japanese take on this English tale. WAVE ENERGY Like so many dreamers before him, Tom Freund went west, from New York to California, in his early 20s. A gifted musician, he played various gigs in New York City while taking classes at Columbia. But it was at Pitzer College in Claremont where Freund met Ben Harper, and their musical collaboration launched both of their careers, as they released an album together in 1992. They’ve since mostly charted their own courses, and after Freund’s first solo album, North American Long Weekend, met critical acclaim, the L.A.-based singer and bass player—upright, electric bass guitar (and some mandolin)—has continued to thrive. His songs, effusive with good vibes, hit like a melodic shoulder rub, loosening you up and maybe even putting a smile on your face. [DS] 7-9pm (doors 6pm) Thursday, Feb. 27. The energetic seven-piece band Yächtley Crëw embodies that vibe not just musically, but in their nautically themed costumes (sailor caps, adorbs) and performance style, encouraging the audience to sing along to the Top 40 from 40-plus years ago. Zawadzki worked on his hands and knees for 37 years doing commercial concrete projects: backyards, patios, sidewalks, interior floors, industrial projects and various functional applications. With time, his concrete artwork has evolved from traditional twodimensional into a new appreciation for the functional and visual aspects of his work. His art pieces present a strong combination of functionality and creativity, combining strong influences from the Lakota Sioux spiritual path, sacredness and sacred geometry. It’s on display in Sylvan Gallery (at 613 Ortiz Ave., Sand City) until March 22.
