www.montereycountynow.com OCTOBER 31-NOVEMBER 6, 2024 MONTEREY COUNTY WEEKLY 31 MUSIC It is not often that small local cities welcome one of the true global sensations of music. It is even less often that sensation precedes our welcome with one of his own. Chao! Chao! Chao! Chao! Chao! Chao!” Translated: “Hello to the whole family from Monterey, California. See you on November 1. I’m JUANES, I want to invite you to our concert that we’re going to do there that’s going to be crazy! We have a party for you. So Golden State Theatre, let’s go there!! See you! Bye! Bye! Bye! Bye! Bye! Bye!” Born Juan Esteban Aristizábal Vásquez in Medellin, Colombia, it is hard to understate the magnitude of his accomplishments. A Latin Grammy Award winner 27 times over, a fourtime Grammy Award winner—his most recent being the 2023 Best Latin Rock Album, Vida Cotidiana—a witty songwriter, a humanitarian, 2019’s Latin Recording Academy Person of the Year, Juanes not only embodies the essence of a global celebrity, but is also a person who genuinely loves what he does. He began making music in the 1980s and earned acclaim with the 2000 album Fijate Bien, the title track becoming something akin to a national anthem. Four years later, he was catapulted to international success with Mi Sangre, the album that gave us “La Camisa Negra.” (If “La Camisa Negra” is still your sole reference to Juanes, pick any one of his 13 certified platinum albums. There is a lot more out there to like.) Juanes’ visit to Monterey—his first—marks the second leg of his Vida Cotidiana tour, largely featuring music from his album of the same name. He still draws from a deep musical well. With childhood inspirations from Argentinian folk singer Carlos Gardel to Metallica—a band he credits as pivotal in his own development as an artist—to pop, cumbia and rock, it is Juanes’ ability to remain familiar while adapting musically that seems to be among his greatest achievements. And perhaps the truest summation lies in his own words to us: “Tenemos una fiesta para ti!” Juanes 8pm Friday, Nov. 1.
