30 MONTEREY COUNTY WEEKLY OCTOBER 31-NOVEMBER 6, 2024 www.montereycountynow.com ART Monterey County is surrounded by beautiful coastal and inland landscapes. Not surprisingly, these views have inspired landscape photographers for many decades. One of them is David Gubernick, a Salinas-based photographer, who has been documenting the area’s flora and fauna for over 20 years. His work has been featured in local publications and in scenic calendars. Macro to Grand Landscapes is a curated selection of Gubernick’s work, now on display at ArtWorks @ Salinas. Visitors will bask in colorful imagery that includes flowers, abstracts and coastline. The photos are printed in different sizes, and mediums include paper, canvas and metal, each giving the images a different feel and texture. Gubernick is a scientist and a selftaught photographer. After his retirement, more than two decades ago, he dedicated a full-time schedule to his passion. “I’m just a nature lover,” he says. “That’s where my heart and soul is.” For Gubernick, photographs are the “emotional response” he feels toward the landscapes that surround him. “It is about that area or subject that speaks to me,” he says. The process involves identifying colors, textures, shapes, angles and light. This guides his composition. Gubernick has explored the area extensively and has published three books, dedicated to Big Sur, Monterey and the wildflowers of Monterey County. Spring and summer are his favorite times to shoot photos, when the flowers are in full bloom and the hills are changing. The sunlight in summer is special, he says. “I love the golden colors of the hills, and also because the sun is lower—it has a different color to it,” he explains. Currently, his work is focused in South Monterey County. “Back roads in South County have a lot to offer in terms of wonderful mountain ranges, hillsides—just gorgeous landscapes,” Gubernick notes. The organizers have also selected work by other local artists Deborah Good, Nathaniel Stapleton, Shagufta Khan and Kenji Tanner to show. But on Friday, Nov. 1, Gubernick will be on full display, giving an artist talk at 4pm, followed by a reception at 5:30pm. Macro to Grand Landscapes is on display 10am-2pm Fridays-Sundays, through Dec. 29. ArtWorks @ Salinas, 262 Main St., Salinas. 622-9060, arts4mc.org.
