But this year Alvarado Street Brewery has particular reason to celebrate. Owner J.C. Hill recently returned from studies at the Doemens Academy in Bavaria with a master brewer certificate after immersive courses in the historic beers of central Europe. So in addition to the brewery’s annual Festbier, a hefty fall lager, Alvarado Street has prepared other notable beers drawing on German heritage. Oktoberfest Märzen is a nod to the mumme-style, dating back to the 1400s. It’s a pleasant yet nuanced lager—pleasant in that it beckons to your senses with the welcome comfort of toasted bread and honey. While adrift in the warmth of this embrace, the beer calls to you with notions of a flowering meadow and fresh citrus, with a trace of bitter regret. Yet it’s also rich and full-bodied. Salute You Schwarz is a dark larger that is equally tempting, but with a distinctly different attitude. This is a beer suited to the glow of a fireplace on a glowering evening. Notes of black coffee send a bitter ripple over the palate, and there is an impression of rustic rye bread. This deep, earthy warmth settles into the contentment of vanilla and dark chocolate. The schwarzbier is more contemplative. For now, Hill plans to test his newfound traditional knowledge at the Carmel brewery, while the Monterey location will continue to innovate.
