Other California statutes and legal authority may affect Sue Cushman, 1931–2026 Susan Hooper Cushman died in her home in the Swan Valley of western Montana on September 9, 2026. Sue led a full life. She was not cheated by death; she is thought to have been the oldest resident in the Swan Valley at 95-and-a-half years young. Sue raised eight kids and traveled the world. She broke barriers on her own all along the way and for the past 35 years lived full time in her forever home in the Swan Valley. Two weeks before her death she was driving herself to church and swapping stories with neighbors at a community fundraiser. Then she got a cold which progressed to pneumonia and she declined any advanced medical care. She was engaged and uppity until the end. All of her kids, many of her grandchildren and even great-grandchildren got the opportunity to visit with her in her final days and say goodbye. She had lots of family telling her how much they loved her those last couple of days. Sue’s life was marked by her efforts to live the lessons of the gospel of the Catholic faith that she held very dearly. She was smart, independent and self-confident – some might say stubborn, but her actions were always guided by joy, peace, forgiveness, charity and, most prominently, by love. Sue was an inspiration to most who knew her, especially to the women in her family, and to many in her community as well. Born in Boston on February 6, 1931 the eldest of five siblings, Sue spent her early years in Gilderslieve, CT. She was raised on goat milk that she milked herself. She went off to Ohio to attend Marietta College where she earned a degree in English with a minor in theater. She then moved to Boston where she met Robert Allerton Cushman (known both as Bob and Cush). They were married six months later in November of 1952 in Hawaii. Over Cush’s professional career, the family moved often and made their home in twelve different cities, including Boulder, Idaho Falls, Washington DC, Stockholm, Vienna and Syracuse. In 1977, they bought property off Kraft Creek Road, south of Condon, MT and they retired there in 1991. They were active in the community, especially committed to the Upper Swan Valley Historical Society, Swan Valley Connections, AARP, Alpine Artisans and the Catholic churches in the Swan Valley and Seeley Lake. Sue felt so welcomed in the Swan Valley. She loved being part of the community more than at any time or place in her long life. She was honored to be considered a friend of so many. The family would like to thank Elilia Martz and all the hospice nurses at Partners in Home Care as well as Father Michael Poole who made house calls to tend to Sue’s spiritual care. But most importantly, the family would like to extend thanks and appreciation to all the Swan Valley neighbors who demonstrated their friendship over the years by looking after Sue. She may have lived alone since her husband died in 2019, but she was never lonely.
