Friday, Oct. 16-Sunday, Oct. 18 POET IN A DEMOCRACY Celebrate Carmel’s most iconic poet this fall at the annual Robinson Jeffers Tor House Foundation Fall Festival. There are many ways to do it. If you are into some serious scholarly explorations, enjoy the whole day Saturday featuring free Jeffers seminars. This year, organizers chose Jeffers’ seemingly prophetic poem “Shine, Perishing Republic” as a theme. Considering the poem’s legacy and examining the fraught connection between art and politics is this year’s aspiration. The event starts with a sunset celebration at Jeffers’ Tor House in Carmel with poetry readings, live music and wine. A Saturday night banquet and Sunday poetry walk follow. Looking at nature closely is essential to their artistic practice. While Phillips considers herself “more of a printer than shutterbug,” Liu describes himself as a Chinese visual artist who employs photography as his primary medium. Natural Order is the title of their shared exhibit at the Center for Photographic Art located at the Sunset Center, 908 San Carlos St., Carmel. An opening reception and walk-through takes place from 4-6pm Saturday, Oct. 17. The gallery is open from noon-4pm WednesdaysSundays. On view until Nov. 29. That said, the artist is giving Weekly readers a sneak peek into what’s to come. Tunnell is at work on Know It Alls: Dedicated Docents of Monterey County, a photographic series and book pairing 60 to 80 of the county’s most significant historic and cultural sites with docents chosen to represent them. The project celebrates the wit and wisdom of these volunteer stewards, many of whom have spent decades keeping alive stories that might otherwise be lost. In the photograph above, we see docents Eleanor Morrice and John Hansen at Point Sur Lighthouse in Big Sur.
