Thursday, Aug. 13 JINGLE JANGLE This is beach music by beach people—in other words, a local band with groovy, pleasant (dare we say jangly) tunes. The Janglers formed in 2024 covering some classics like Fleetwood Mac and The Beach Boys (naturally) in addition to originals. They call themselves a band of songwriters, with frontman Bo Jacobson and drummer John Bruce writing music, relying lyrically on recognizable Monterey Bay imagery and motifs (“trying to swim the tide / I’m only trying to survive”). With guitarist Scott Mayhew and bassist James Perry, they’ve been rocking out privately for a couple of years, and this performance marks their first public show for a hometown audience. The theater is actually in a garage, but there are some amazing classics lined up to face the screen. Learn about the early Monterey Bay motoring culture and the beginning of the horseless carriage and racing at the Racing to Del Monte & Pebble Beach exhibit at Monterey History and Art at Stanton Center. In addition to drivable art pieces, there are rare photographs from the 1903 inaugural races from San Jose to the famed Del Monte Hotel race track and Pebble Beach, and photos from the groundbreaking hill climbs along Carmel Hill. Whimsy and macabre are the key words when it comes to this show that features artists Katrina Diaz, Savanna Garcia, Jose Bathory and Zylee Diaz and the variety of their work—still nature pieces, crocheted items, hancrafted art and mixed media compositions. The show “explores the delicate dance between devotion and loss, beauty and decay, memory and imagination,” according to the organizers. Garcia, whose piece is shown above, can be found on Instagram @gloomgallery_. Face and facial expression is a crucial theme in her work.
