Friday, June 5 WYLDE IN CARMEL Who says the Sunset Center is all high-brow symphony-goers? If you put on a tux for DJ Paul Wylde, no one would judge, just so long as you can groove to it. The local music spinner has a collection that’s perfect for the sunset on the terrace to prime your Friday night with elegance in the form of jazz, soul and funk. But don’t get too comfortable, because Wylde is known to take people on rides into an eclectic jam that must be heard to be believed. Attendees of other local venues like Compact Disco and Barmel already know. [SC] 5:30pm Friday, June 5. Sunset Center, San Carlos and 9th, Carmel. Free; RSVP recommended. Later, in 2020, the band earned nominations for two Grammy Awards— Best American Roots Performance and Best American Roots Song—for their song “Call My Name.” They ended up winning the latter. The trio brings their angelic harmonies, multiple guitars and stringed instruments to Carmel for their Sing Me Alive tour, a soul-searching body of work that reaches into the past while navigating a chaotic present and bravely moving into the unknown. This is the 63rd edition of the group’s annual exhibit, The Living Art of Bonsai. This one-day-only show includes a demonstration on how to shape a tree by Katsumi Kinoshita, the club’s sensei, who has over 50 years of experience working on bonsai. “Bonsai is a living art form,” wrote artist Heidi Hybl on behalf of the club. “Its objective is to capture the grandeur of and beauty of nature on a small scale. Every tree is unique.” Noon-4pm Sunday, June 7. Subdued tones bring stillness to his houses, barns, rivers, brushes and wetlands. The above piece, “Moonlight Hills,” is representative of his other works, with the full moon—a motif that repeats—ruling over the night. Tette, Gerard Martin, Howard Perkins, Stan Robbins and Timothy Sloan come together for Friends, a group show at the Carmel Art Association, celebrating the beauty of the natural world through the eyes of five painters with their own distinct styles. The show is united by a shared love of light, color and painting from observation. A reception takes place at 4-7pm Saturday, June 13. On display until July 6 at CAA, on Dolores between 5th and 6th, Carmel. Open daily from 10am-5pm. [AP] Folk trio I’m With Her might have an old-timey sound but they are not nostalgic for another time, instead singing very much about the present and the future.
