Friday, May 29 BEACHY KEEN What is better than a sunset at the beach? Not much, really. However, if it came with music, that would be very cool. And thanks to the Sunset Music Series at Asilomar, it is. This week the day ends to the tunes of Matt Masih & The Messengers, perhaps the area’s ultimate party your ass off band. Their blend of funk, soul and ska will have you grooving old school, with originals and covers. There are food, drinks and s’mores kits for sale. As everyone knows, the combination of sunset, the beach and live music becomes even more awesome with s’mores involved. [DF] 6-9pm Friday, May 29. GET PSYCHED Windows emerged from Los Angeles in 2018, the brainchild of musician Matteo Arias—a project steeped in old California country, classic surf rock and West Coast psychedelia. The band debuted with the 2019 single “The Ballad of Whiskey Pete” before releasing a 2024 EP, Raindrops on the Open Road. The record shows the bands influences—Canned Heat, the Lovin’ Spoonful, Relatively Clean Rivers—while pushing the sound forward with a modern psychedelic edge. In Pacific Grove, they play with Big Sur’s own representative in psychedelic rock, Richard Tripps. Tripps formed a band under his name in 2023, but has been writing and recording music for years before that, making him a local musical institution. [AP] 7pm Friday, May 29. The piece shown above, “Old Custom House, Monterey, California” was painted by Myron Oliver (18911967) in 1934. It is part of A Visual History of Art and Architecture in Monterey, a show curated by local artist Joaquin Turner and art historian Cynthia Wagner Weick. Oliver was born to a muralist and portrait painter father, became an “unemployed artist,” as he described himself early on while registering for a military draft, and became very active in Carmel, at some point serving as the Carmel Art Association’s president. The exhibit explores Monterey’s art and architectural traditions and is up until Aug. 30. MMA is located at 559 Pacific St., Monterey, open 11am-5pm Thursday-Sunday. The work is a combination of screen prints, colored pencil/gouache illustrations—mostly roses— and the common theme throughout is a metallic element (hence the title, silver linings). The opening, free to attend, is also an interactive art party. Chris Powers, the force behind The Underground Forrest, will be making live screenprints of a graphic featured in the show and Silverstein’s Delicatessen sets up a food pop-up. The opening takes place from 3:30-7pm Friday, May 29 at Six Over Coffee Co., at 160 Webster St., Monterey.
