34 MONTEREY COUNTY WEEKLY MAY 7-13, 2026 www.montereycountynow.com ONSTAGE Hair, the musical that remains part of American and international repertoires since its controversial premiere in 1967, is a reference item when it comes to the hippie movement—a people against war and for equality. How has it aged? Enchantrix Theater is bringing Hair: The American Tribal Love-Rock Musical to two locations in Monterey County—Fox Theater in Salinas and the Henry Miller Library in Big Sur. Enchantrix is a local theater group grassrooted among younger actors. The company enjoys big productions, often centered around outcast-themed stories, and has given audiences large casts and original and clever scenic design. The main reflection upon watching this fun, entertaining take is that not much changed in the U.S. While behaviors seem more relaxed than 60 years ago and long hair or tattoos will not get anyone fired today, in our political landscape the country still deals with the same problems. The government wages wars without the consent of its people, women struggle against the glass ceiling and a block of voters celebrate racism. Hair is a collection of songs, and plot is really secondary. All the favorites are performed by the artists of Enchantrix: “Aquarius” opens (the character of free-thinking Dionne is played by Aaliyah Medina), followed by Berger (Blue Hendricks), the self-proclaimed psychedelic teddy-bear singing “Donna.” The anti-racism anthem “Colored Spade” is delivered by the gregarious Black man Hud (Jared Walters). Sheighlyn McCullough plays NYU student and protester Sheila, Cody Moore takes the role of sexually open Woof. They all belong to a loose commune they refer to as the tribe, questioning the conventional lifestyle in New York of the late ’60s. Lanier Fairchild is the director and the choreographer for the show, and Tara Mann serves as vocal director. The stage is set around a giant rainbow wave, a background that can be called anything but boring. Hair is a fitting choice after earlier Enchantrix productions: Man of La Mancha in 2023 and Jesus Christ Superstar in 2025. This company doesn’t shy away from large, ambitious projects. Hair: The American Tribal Love-Rock Musical runs 7:30pm Thursday, May 7-Saturday, May 9; 2pm Sunday, May 10 at Fox Theater, 241 Main St., Salinas. $33-$60. 7:30 Saturday, May 23 at Henry Miller Memorial Library, 48603 Highway 1, Big Sur. By Agata Popęda Given current circumstances, Hair makes as much a counterculture statement today as it did in 1967.
