www.montereycountynow.com APRIL 9-15, 2026 MONTEREY COUNTY WEEKLY 31 ONSTAGE When it comes to theater, King City firmly believes the rule is “go big or go home.” Productions at the Robert Stanton Theater do not happen often, but when they take place, the shows are always something ambitious. This time it’s the 1930s musical comedy Anything Goes, a story of romance and ambitions set on an ocean liner, composed by Cole Porter and co-written by P.G. Wodehouse. Stowaway Billy is in love with an heiress named Hope, who is already engaged. His effort to break this union apart is supported by arguably the most important character in the show, a singer named Reno who embodies the progressive ideas of an independent woman. “She is polished, sassy, fun and challenging,” says Jamie Jones, who plays Reno and is the board president and theater committee chair at Sol Treasures, a nonprofit that—in a partnership with Center Stage Theatrical Productions—supports most of the theater productions in King City. She was not familiar with the show until she saw the 2011 Broadway professional recording and loved it. “Reno represents things new,” adds Jeff Hinderscheid who directs the musical and plays Billy. “All the girls want to be her; all the guys want to be with her.” The King City audience is a particular one. People travel from Monterey, Salinas or Paso Robles to watch the performances, which engage with the theatrical community from all over the region, drawing actors and crew members from outside King City. “Our local audience here works in agriculture; it’s migrant and can be seasonal,” Hinderscheid explains. “We constantly re-convince them to come and see performances. That’s why we always rotate styles, giving them different musicals. This time we wanted to do a golden age classic musical.” The cast includes 33 actors, with several main characters. Many play a dual character, as both cast and production member. Sol Treasures is proud of its many actors who have been involved in plays since middle school and now, in high school, they are “well-behaved, prepared young professionals,” Hinderscheid says, emphasizing the commitment of being an educational theater.
