A PETITION FOR PROBATE HAS BEEN FILED BY LINDA KAREN DAVIS in the Superior Court of California, County of Monterey. Born in Carmel, California and raised in Carmel Valley, Jim met and fell in love with his wife of nearly 50 years, DeeDee (deceased, 2009). After graduating Carmel High School in 1956, Jim went on to graduate from his beloved alma mater, the University of California, Berkeley (Go Bears!) before also attending optometry school at Cal. He had a long and illustrious practice in Salinas for over 50 years. He adored his patients, and they him, often having multiple generations of families over the years. After a brief time living in Salinas, he and DeeDee returned to Carmel Valley to raise their two daughters, Sarah and Stacey. Active in the community, Jim was a longtime member of the Salinas Jaycees, Rotary Club, and acted as President of the Como Del Rodeo in the early 1970s. He was an involved girl dad, participating in his girls’ swim club (Carmel Barracudas) and 4-H Club where he led the backpacking group. Jim was his happiest when he was outdoors, whether that was in his treasured garden, backpacking (Mount Whitney, Tahoe Rim Trail, John Muir Trail – twice!, Ventana Wilderness, and other locations throughout the Sierras), skiing, and tennis. He and DeeDee also enjoyed traveling all over the world, continuing his travels with family and friends after her passing. Another cherished respite for Jim was his home in Lake Tahoe, where he could host family and friends during any season and enjoy the nearby slopes, trails or the lake itself - he took up jet skiing in his 70s and enjoyed it every summer until he was 85! Jim is survived by his two daughters Sarah Hicks and Stacey Pray (Max), three grandchildren James Hicks, Kelly Kavanaugh (Tyler), Henry Pray (Britta), great granddaughter Maeve Kavanaugh, and brother William “Bill” Hicks (Margie). Generous in spirit and time – whether that was with dogs, foreign exchange students or family and friends – Jim will be greatly missed. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Big Sur Land Trust or Pancreatic Cancer Action Network. We love you Jim, Dad, Papa.
