Tangier was a seaplane tender during World War II. It survived Pearl Harbor and was involved in several battles. There was also a patrol vessel of the same name that operated during World War I. Now, if you’re wondering just why the hell we’re on the subject, the blame falls on the folks at Alvarado Street Brewery. But the reward for a bit of drinking and research belongs to its guests. U.S.S. Tangier is a bright and friendly American pale ale. However, there is a confidence to it that stands apart from the easygoing style. The genial demeanor comes from Tangier hops, which lend a creamy orange sensation, both fresh and nostalgic (remember Creamsicles?). This is countered by an impression similar to buckwheat honey, with a dampened earthy sweetness and a bitter streak that grounds the beer and complements the juicy citrus. It’s a deft showcase of hops and malt. Alvarado Street’s brewing team kept things simple—malt and Tangier hops—to create such an inviting and nuanced ale. U.S.S. Tangier is hop-forward without being as obvious as an IPA. It is unthreatening in appearance, but packs a 6-percent ABV punch. And then there’s the name, which is in this case quite fitting. Consider IPAs as big fleet aircraft carriers. Seaplane tenders may have been small, but their craft could reach just as far.
