But not Jose Miguel, owner of American Burger. No, he thinks of milkshakes—and he may be on to something. Vanilla ice cream and avocado become decadent fun in milkshake form. The fruit (yes, scientists say so) builds on the richness of ice cream. It becomes silkier, almost luxurious. The buttery sensation of avocado quells some of the sweetness while lending a faint, nutty tang. Peanut butter, bacon and vanilla ice cream—identified on the menu as the “Crazzy Shake”—makes more of a statement. Peanut butter spreads over the palate first. Bacon comes to your attention slowly, but the weighty sensation sticks. A smoky haze rises from the cream as the nutty fat sinks into the blend of peanut butter and cream. And the combination begins to feel normal. “I wanted—not the usual flavors,” Miguel says of his rationale. “I started playing around.” He admits that the unexpected combinations may catch people off guard. But the other shakes in the American Burger lineup are more familiar: mocha cappuccino, chocolate banana, Oreo cookie and, of course, chocolate, vanilla and strawberry.
