Patricia M. Barajas City Clerk Salinas, California MICHAEL KENT SHEFFER Dec. 15, 1946 - Aug. 30, 2025 Pacific Grove Michael Kent Sheffer, 78, died on Aug. 30 from multiple health issues. When Mike saw the beauty of Pacific Grove for the first time, he knew this was where he wanted to spend the rest of his life. And so he did, for 55 years. He met his wife Karen there, and they lived most of that time on Benito Avenue, the last of the old hippies who inhabited The Hill. Mike was a kind, generous and gentle man who loved his wife, a few close friends, his sister Bonnie and all animals. Settled in his recliner, he enjoyed watching programs about history, science and extraterrestrials. “The Big Bang Theory” was a big favorite. Mike was also a voracious reader. Living at their house on The Hill was reminiscent of a 1950s neighborhood. Neighbors would drop in unannounced and were always welcome. Mike wouldn’t bother getting out of his recliner. With his back to the door, he’d yell, “Come on in!” without worrying about who might be waiting on the other side. Even cats were drawn to the Sheffers. Some came to visit, others came to stay, and all were welcome ... Snively, the Orange Guys and many more. Mike’s favorite furry friend, Cosmo, a little rescued Yorkie, accompanied Mike wherever he went. Cosmo’s passing left a hole in Mike’s heart, and we hope they are now reunited. Back in the day, Karen and Mike enjoyed riding bikes to Los Laureles Lodge to catch some of the Valley sun. They also enjoyed camping and exploring Northern California and Oregon. Mike loved all kinds of music and trying new recipes from Bon Appetit. Many evenings he’d prepare dinner, a glass of wine in hand, while listening to music from the 1930s to the 1970s, with a cozy fire burning in the fireplace. One of Mike’s happiest times was teaching aerobics at Spa Jazz and Garden Racquetball Club in Monterey. The refrigerator was decorated with photos from his kick-butt class. One day devoted groupies showed up wearing T-shirts that read “I Survived Mikey’s Class,” “Body by Mike,” “Mike’s #1,” and “I Sweat with Mike.” Mike retired as food service manager from the Pacific Grove School District where the students knew him as the Food Dude. Prior to that, he was employed as a chef at Le Bistro in Carmel where he enjoyed cooking and extending his family of friends. Julia Child’s visit to Le Bistro was a high point. Mike proudly displayed a framed napkin with Julia’s familiar “Bon appetit” autograph along with her lipstick print. Like all of us, Mike’s life was imperfect but meaningful. He was loved by those close to him, and he left this world on his own terms. He’s survived by Karen, his wife of 50 years; and sisters, Bonnie Bora and Rochelle Caldwell. At his request, there will be no service. Donations to Animal Friends Rescue Project (AFRP) or Peace of Mind Dog Rescue in Pacific Grove are appreciated.
