34 MONTEREY COUNTY WEEKLY OCTOBER 16-22, 2025 www.montereycountynow.com Send ideas to montereycountynow.com/events HOT PICKS remaining, none of the teams on the outside of the postseason line have been mathematically eliminated from the playoffs. Monterey Bay FC sits in 10th as they take on Eastern Conference foe Pittsburgh, but their eyes are ultimately on Phoenix, which clings to 8th, the final playoff spot. With wins in their final two matches, Monterey would finish on 34 points. Phoenix currently stands on 33. In between is Orange County, with 31—a team that conceivably could climb as high as 4th in the standings by season’s end. Got all of that? It’s easier to go out and watch the game than to do the math. [DF] 7pm Saturday, Oct. 18. Cardinale Stadium, 4111 2nd Ave., Seaside. $21-$59. (831) 3242560, montereybayfc.com. PAINTING WITH PRIDE Finding and customizing new home decor can be an adventure. It gets even better when people bring friends or family and a glass of wine or beer. Monterey Peninsula Pride is hosting a ceramic sip and paint event. There is a large variety of ceramics and colors to choose from (Pride rainbow colors are, of course, an option), including wall art, cups, mugs and jewelry boxes. All ages welcome; those ages 21+ can bring their own beer or wine. [CJ] 7-9pm Saturday, Oct. 18. Hot Spot Studios, 458 Alvarado St., Monterey. $20-$30. peninsulapride.org. THRASH AND SMASH The skate punk scene in Salinas was thriving in the aughts, and one band that emerged from that scene to tour elsewhere was Hate For State, who are playing their first hometown show in three years at Heirloom Pizza in Salinas. Grounded in anti-government lyrics inspired by an era of Forever Wars, Hate For State brings the unrelenting punk energy to stage, the kind of music made for the mosh pit, and perhaps, this moment. Local punk stalwarts The Tremolos and Outpatient X open. [DS] 8pm Saturday, Oct. 18. Live @Heirloom Pizza, 344 Main St., Salinas. $10, $60/table for four. (831) 998-8824, heirloompizzapie.com. Wednesday, Oct. 22 OPPOSITES ATTRACT Once upon a time in Carmel, a radical leftist journalist came to town and instead of being shunned for his views, he was warmly welcomed. That’s the storyline behind the talk “The Muckraker: How the Radical Lincoln Steffens Won the Hearts (If Not the Minds) of Carmel,” presented by award-winning local journalist Joe Livernois. Steffens was one of the leading muckraking journalists of the early 20th century, committed to rooting out corruption in government. He also promoted socialist ideas, not shared by many Carmelites. Steffens retired to Carmel in 1927, engaging in lively debates with others, winning their admiration and respect. [PM] 7pm Wednesday, Oct. 22. Carpenter Hall at the Sunset Center, San Carlos and 9th, Carmel. Free with registration. (831) 6242811, carmelpubliclibraryfoundation.org. Hot Picks by Sloan Campi, Erik Chalhoub, Dave Faries, Celia Jiménez, Pam Marino, Agata Popęda, Katie Rodriguez, Sara Rubin and David Schmalz. The Tremolos (above) help welcome Hate For State back to Salinas for the first time in three years in an Oct. 18 punk concert that also has Outpatient X on the bill.
