Monday, Sept. 8 HISTORIC HAUNT Is the Stokes Adobe, one of Monterey’s oldest buildings, haunted? Built in 1833, the adobe soon fell into the ownership of James Stokes, a British naval deserter who, it is said, absconded with a kit of medical supplies and made a good living in Monterey as a quack doctor, so much so that he was able to expand the house. But he also became a raging alcoholic, which drove him take a suicidal dose of strychnine. The Old Monterey Business Association hosts local writer, editor and amateur historian Amelia Ward at Casa Serrano for a talk about the adobe’s colorful— and some might say dark—history. [DS] 7pm Monday, Sept. 8. Casa Serrano, 412 Pacific St., Monterey. Free; $10 donation suggested. grandparlor@ndgw.org, ndgw.org. Tuesday, Sept. 9 MODEL T It is said that Mat Kearney began writing his own songs because he was so bad at playing covers. We’re all fortunate for his one musical weakness, because the Nashville-based performer known for bringing hip-hop, EDM, pop and folk into his songs crafted a string of top 40 hits that resonate on both the U.S. Adult Pop and Christian charts. Two of his albums—City of Black & White and Young Love—were charttoppers. And he has a new album out. So in addition to hits such as “Nothing Left to Lose” and “One Heart,” he may play material from Mat Kearney (Still Drowning in Nostalgia). By the way, it is said that Mat with one t is thanks to a typo by the nurse at his birth. [DF] 7:30pm Tuesday, Sept. 9.
