Thursday, Sept. 4 CARRY ON If you were alive in the 1970s, chances are “Carry on Wayward Son” was playing in the background nearly every time you tuned into FM radio. “Carry On” was the first chart hit in 1976 for the progressive rock band Kansas, followed in 1977 by “Dust in the Wind.” The two rock ballads spent 200 weeks on the Billboard charts. Five decades later the band is still rocking, with 16 studio albums and five live albums to their credit. “Carry On” remains one of the top five songs played on classic rock stations and “Dust” has been played over 3 million times. She is an international touring artist and “Jazz Flutist of the Year,” with a career spanning five decades. She’s recorded over two dozen albums on major jazz labels and is the founder of the groundbreaking Jazz Flute Big Band. Back in the early ’90s, as principal flutist with the Monterey Bay Orchestra, she performed with classical artists Julius Baker and Luciano Pavarotti. She’s authored a definitive book on learning to play and conducts master classes worldwide. One of them is Susann Cate Lynn, a painter from Pacific Grove. “I was born and raised in Carmel, where the culture of artistic expression and extraordinary natural beauty was an everyday part of my youth, and helped foster my desire to express and create artistically,” Lynn wrote on her website. Gathering for Women uses proceeds from the local artists to support daily operations of the center. This year’s kickoff event is on Saturday, Sept. 6 at Venture Gallery in Monterey. [AP] 4-10 SEPTEMBER HOT PICKS To see more local events, and add your own, visit calendar.montereycountynow.com SUSANN CATE LYNN JEVIN LEE ALBUQUERQUE VISUALS JEVIN LEE ALBUQUERQUE Among new exhibits at the Pacific Grove Art Center is Art Fusion, an exhibit by Painters and Poets, a group featuring Jevin Lee Albuquerque, Tonni Lynn Albuquerque and Katieann Vogel. The members of the group are poets that happen to also be visual artists. The exhibition includes narrative, abstract and pastel paintings. Themes include the ocean, nature, jazz and other intersections of expression. The California coast, storytelling and the history of art and literature have long served as inspiration for the group.
