Thursday, Aug. 28- Monday, Sept. 1 FAIR GAME There’s no guarantee that you’ll lose your heart at the fairgrounds. We’re not even sure there are bumper cars—or a tunnel of love, if you want a reference to a more recent (sort of) song. But you will definitely have a lot of fun, be wildly entertained, learn something new, eat something on a stick and perhaps even win a prize at the Monterey County Fair. Tickets are needed for the rodeo on Sunday only. A wristband is needed for the carnival rides every day. Want to know a little more before you go? Check out the story on p. 33. Thursday, Aug. 28 HIGH ENERGY Folktale Winery events offer many seating options at various prices, but it seems that sitting will be the last thing on your mind this evening. For the Live in the Vines series, Folktale and KRML 94.7 FM combine forces to bring great live music to Carmel Valley. This time it’s The Brothers Comatose, an Americana band from San Francisco, famous for their high-energy performances. The members are brothers Ben (guitar) and Alex (banjo) Morrison, Steve Height (bass), Philip Brezina (violin) and Addie Levy (mandolin). This modern take on folk and bluegrass is known to move the audience from their seats. [AP] 5pm (doors), 6pm show Thursday, Aug. 28. Clark is a young glass artist, introduced to the craft by a simple gift of an ornament-making box he received for Christmas. “From then on, I was hooked,” he says, adding he started taking glass-making classes in the summer of eighth grade. “When I was first learning, we did not have the funds to buy colored glass to use. So I started using ‘scrap’ to add color to my pieces.” (Scrap refers to what is left after a piece is done.) “Now that I am able to purchase color, I still love using scrap because this way no two pieces will ever be the same,” Clark continues. These days he makes glass paperweights, flowers, pumpkins and Christmas ornaments. Visit the gallery, located at 218 Main St., Salinas, from 5-8pm on Friday, Sept. 5 for an opening reception. Regular hours are 10am-6pm daily except Wednesdays. AoHC is a Hacienda Carmel Community arts club that provides space for exhibits (four to five each year), studio space, classes and eight educational luncheons with speakers, as well as field trips, painting sessions and more. This time, the featured artist is Heather McLaren, whose fabric art is based on historical references. She raises the silkworms, dyes the silk, raises the sheep and spins the yarn, and finally creates the designs. Each of her tapestries takes months. The tapestries will be hanging in the Casa Fiesta building at Hacienda Carmel (on Via Mallorca, off Carmel Valley Road) throughout September. [AP] Every good fair needs a Ferris wheel, from which one can take a look from above and embrace it all—the crowd, the animals, the performing musicians and the cotton candy stand.
