36 MONTEREY COUNTY WEEKLY JULY 31-AUGUST 6, 2025 www.montereycountynow.com CHILL Rosé is one of the obvious wines to pair with a summer afternoon—one without a marine layer, at least. The brisk acidity, as well as the cool and inviting hue, lend a casual and refreshing vibe to the day. Naturally one can select from a number of varietals, Pinot Noir being a local favorite. For its pink wine, Twisted Roots opted for Cinsault—a grape favored with rich foods thanks to its tart currant and cherry profile— from a vineyard first planted in 1886. Rosé is in fashion after years of reluctance from American consumers. For a style of wine in vogue with younger generations, there is a certain hoary air to the decision to use grapes from one of the state’s oldest vineyards and a varietal often paired with escargot. And the resulting 2024 Rosé is more intense than many others in the category, cavorting over the palate with a brisk acidity, like biting into a green apple. Yet there is a richness to the wine, like cut peaches and whole berries, as well as a soft floral note. Hints of earthy spice lead to a musty impression on the finish that balances the bright fruits. And always there is a subtle minerality. The bouquet prepares you for this— at least somewhat. It’s a floral wine in the glass, with swirls of ripening fruit. Twisted Roots produced just over 150 cases of the 2024 Rosé of Cinsault. It’s a good bottle to share as the sun begins to waver and the first streaks of dusk appear, when it’s time to set aside the lighter pink wines.
