Sunday, August 3 LIVING HISTORY Driving down Highway 1 into Big Sur, you’ll eventually reach a beautiful stretch of highway with an incredible vista: fields of cattle butting up against a wild sea. A magnificent 361-foottall rock, Point Sur, juts out along the coastline, topped by what looks like a small red tower. That tower is the Point Sur Lighthouse, which was first lit in August 1889 and helped guide ships toward safe passage through the wild Big Sur seas. You can join Point Sur docents for a living history day, where you’ll climb into the lighthouse, picnic atop the rock, and maybe even spot a few marine mammals. [KR] Noon-4pm Sunday, Aug. 3. Point Sur State Historic Park, 19 miles south of Rio Road, Carmel (mile post 54.1). $30/adults, $15/ children ages 6-17. pointsur.org. Tuesday, August 5 MEET THE COPS Oftentimes, the only interaction people have with their local law enforcement is when they are at odds with the law—not the most positive of situations. National Night Out is a time when the public can get to know the people behind the badge in a fun, family-friendly environment. Seven cities across Monterey County—Gonzales, King City, Marina, Pacific Grove, Salinas, Seaside and Soledad—are taking part in this national community-building campaign. Expect plenty of equipment demonstrations, games, food and more. Maybe even a hot dog eating competition will break out. [EC] Various times Tuesday, Aug. 5. Across Monterey County. Check cities’ websites for information. Wednesday, August 6 IT’S WINDY The classical music intensives continue this summer at Hidden Valley Music Seminars with the Festival of Winds, a two-week seminar to generate America’s next generation of wind instrumental artists—think oboes, clarinets, bassoons and horns. The festival is a chance for 18 fellows to work closely with five master teachers and performers. The seminar is capped off with four free concerts for the public, starting with the faculty, who will be playing several pieces, including “Dance of the Seven Veils,” by composer Richard Strauss. Student concerts follow on Aug. 8, 11 and 15. [PM] 7:30pm Wednesday, Aug. 6. Hidden Valley Music Seminars, 104 West Carmel Valley Road, Carmel Valley. Free. 659-3115, festivalofwinds.org. Hot Picks by Sloan Campi, Erik Chalhoub, Dave Faries, Celia Jiménez, Pam Marino, Agata Popęda, Katie Rodriguez, Sara Rubin and David Schmalz. National Night Out presents a fun and welcoming opportunity for people of all ages to interact with law enforcement officers and learn more about what they do.
