SPIRITING AWAY The Obon Festival is uniquely Japanese, an annual festival that honors one’s ancestors in the Buddhist tradition, drawing people back home to reunite with their families. At the Buddhist Temple of Salinas, the Obon Festival is a day-long celebration of Japanese culture. An outdoor stage hosts performances of taiko, kendo and dance; there are classes to learn ikebana, bonsai and an introduction to Buddhism; and a tea ceremony. Japanese food, of course, will be on offer—bento boxes, sushi, udon and more—and games will be played. The temple should be filled with high spirits. [DS] Noon-5pm Sunday, July 27. Buddhist Temple of Salinas, 14 California St., Salinas (additional parking and free shuttle at Salinas Adult School, 20 Sherwood Place). Free. 424-4105, btsalinas.org. WONDERLAND WELCOME Carolyn Wonderland has been inducted into the Austin Music Hall of Fame. Bob Dylan is also a fan. The Texasborn guitarist, songwriter and vocalist headlines the next concert in the City of Seaside’s Sunday Blues in the Park. Wonderland has been described as being on tour since she first started performing professionally at 15, and this time, she celebrates her new album, Truth Is. [EC] 1-4:30pm Sunday, July 27. Laguna Grande Park, 1249 Canyon Del Rey Blvd., Seaside. Free. 899-6800, ci.seaside.ca.us/825/ Recreation-Services. MUSIC THAT MATTERS Sure, you can go to a big arena concert. Who does it benefit? A record label, corporate sponsors and the musicians—probably in that order. But when John Nymann from Y&T gathers some of his friends together for a performance, it benefits the Monterey nonprofit Gathering for Women. Nymann’s group includes Y&T buds Mike Vanderhule and Brad Lang, so the show is going to rock. Plus you are doing some good for those who need a bit of help. [DF] 6pm Sunday, July 27.
