After graduating from La Salle University, she obtained her JD degree from Temple University, and was admitted to the Bar in 1979. She joined a large Philadelphia law firm where her practice focused on Business and Corporate Law and, when she became General Counsel for the pharmaceutical company SmithKline, she added, Biotechnology, Intellectual Property and Regulatory Law to her areas of practice. While at SmithKline, Marian met her husband Paul Lawrence and, in 1985, they married and then created Litmus Concepts, a biotechnology company in Silicon Valley. She served as Executive VP, General Counsel and CFO, as well as a member of the Board, until they sold the company in 2000. By that time, they had bought a weekend home in Pacific Grove and, after retiring, moved into it full time. Marian immediately began to work with the Community Foundation for Monterey County. She became the first President of the Advisory Council for The Women’s Fund, supporting women and girls and establishing programs to benefit their health and education needs and providing business education and loan opportunities to small businesswomen. Marian and Paul also created a Donor Advisor Fund and a Charitable Remainder Trust with the CFMC. In 2007, the couple bought a home in Key Colony Beach which became their permanent residence. Although they continued to spend five months of the year in Pacific Grove, Marian expanded her philanthropic work by volunteering with the Community Foundation of the Florida Keys where she became a Board member and the founding Chair of the Middle Keys Advisory Council. She is quoted as saying, “We worked very hard. It was important to give back both during our lifetime and after we’re gone.” Predeceased by her parents and her husband Paul, Marian is survived by her sister, Theresa (Tree) Motyka, her aunt, Clorinda Guarino, and her nephew and his family, David and Cara Buccafurni, Nicholas and Audrey. Celebrations of Marian’s life by her many friends will take place in both the Florida Keys and the Monterey Peninsula. Donations in Marian’s honor and memory may be made to the Buccafurni– Lawrence Fund at the Community Foundation of Monterey County at cfmco.org/buccafurnilawrence.
