Sunday, July 6 GORD’S GOLD If there was a voice that characterized the 1970s, one could make a good case that it was Gordon Lightfoot’s. The Canadian singer-songwriter’s music was ubiquitous on FM radio throughout the decade, from “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald,” based on a real freighter sinking in Lake Superior in 1975, to “Carefree Highway,” “If you Could Read My Mind,” “Beautiful” and many others. The Robert Marcum Trio is bringing a tribute to Lightfoot to Pacific Grove, featuring singer Diana Z. Marcum is himself a singer/songwriter/guitarist whose roots are in the early San Francisco folk/rock scene and Lightfoot was one of his earliest influences. If anyone can perform Lightfoot, it’s Marcum. [PM] 7-9pm Sunday, July 6, Pacific Grove Art Center, 568 Lighthouse Ave., Pacific Grove. $29. 375-2208, pgartcenter.org. SIPS AND SOUNDS Few locations anywhere can match Blue Fox Cellars’ tasting room and outdoor space on Pilot Road in Carmel Valley, where the Santa Lucia Range towers to the south, Jacks Peak can be seen to the north, and on a clear day, the valley is awash in sunshine. Add some tunes, a plate of cheese and charcuterie to enjoy with the wine, and it has all the makings of a perfectly lovely afternoon. Local classic rocker Chuck Brewer and his band swing into Blue Fox to make that afternoon a reality, a way to wind down festively from the long holiday weekend. [DS] 2-4pm Sunday, July 6. Blue Fox Cellars, 25 Pilot Road, Carmel Valley. Free. 298-7457. bluefoxcellars.wine. Tuesday, July 8 BEYOND QUAINT “Quaint” is the word most often used to describe Carmel by those who live, work and visit—an ode to the preserved quirky downtown, shingled roofs, mossy tree cover, eclectic homes and secret cobbled pathways. But the documentary Don’t Pave Main Street (narrated by Clint Eastwood) aims to show that Carmel is more than quaint. It has a rich cultural history, shaped by Native Americans, explorers and missionaries, writers and artists. The film explored the ongoing tension between preserving the heritage and the unique charm of Carmel against the pressures of development. The film will be shown at the Golden Bough Playhouse, with an introduction by Mayor Dale Byrne. [KR] 5:30pm Tuesday, July 8. Golden Bough Playhouse, Monte Verde between 8th and 9th, Carmel. $11. 622-0100, pacrep.org. Hot Picks by Sloan Campi, Erik Chalhoub, Dave Faries, Celia Jiménez, Pam Marino, Agata Popęda, Katie Rodriguez, Sara Rubin and David Schmalz.
