Drummers from across Monterey County will pay tribute to the legend in Salinas. Levee Breakers will be joined by Houseband of the Holy in a performance of nothing but the Zeppelin classics. Will there be a “Moby Dick” drum solo? You have to be there to find out—and if it’s anything like last year’s Bonzo tribute show, tickets will sell out. [EC] 8-11pm Saturday, July 5. Heirloom Pizza Co., 344 Main St., Salinas. $10/advance, $15/ door. 998-8824, heirloompizzapie.com. KISS OF LIFE Oxytocin, dopamine and serotonin all get released in the brain when you kiss someone. We’re fans of consensual kissing, no matter what gender expression you decide to smooch. But what if that feeling was captured in music? There’s probably no better singer who has done just that than Sade. Between the smooth R&B melodies and dramatically ethereal vocals, you may just think you’re back in a ’90s lounge when you hear her. Sade herself won’t be in Monterey, but a cover band featuring Monterey County’s own Malinda DeRouen taking the mic, is not far off. Her bandmates form Diamond Life for a performance right after the homecoming of DJ David Harness (see page 31), who was married at the very bar they’ll be playing at Pearl Hour. [SC] 9pm Saturday, July 5. Pearl Hour, 214 Lighthouse Ave., Monterey. $10. 657-9447, pearlhour.com. BIG GROOVES Got plans for Saturday night? Well, now you do. Fernwood Bar and Grill is hosting Windows and Richard Tripps for a show under the Big Sur stars. Windows, a Los Angeles-based band, blends California country and surf rock into a dreamy West Coast psychedelic sound. Think: a neopsych rock version of The Smiths and Babe Rainbow—or a cruisier take on the Allah-Las. They’ll be performing alongside Richard Tripps, whose music leans into the breezy and melancholic vibes, bringing an indie folk-rock edge to the evening. Catch them at Fernwood’s Resort grounds, surrounded by giant redwoods and summer night air. To those attending, drive responsibly. [KR] 8pm Saturday, July 5. Fernwood Bar and Grill, 47200 Highway 1, Big Sur. Free. fernwoodbigsur.com. Saturday, July 5 - Sunday, July 6 SOMETHING NEW EMERGES “Every day is a fresh start, a blank canvas to paint upon,” the late sports journalist Craig Sager once said. In the case of the Emerging Composers Intensive, the fresh start is on a blank piece of sheet music, a whole new direction for the future of classical music. Each summer, 10 young composers spend two weeks at Hidden Valley Seminars for creative collaboration under the guidance of renowned faculty members. They develop new chamber works and rehearse them, culminating in performances as a gift to the community. This year there are two concerts: “A Timeless Reverie” with SaintSaëns: Fantaisie for Violin and Harp, on Saturday evening; and, “Originality and Authenticity” with Mozart: Piano Quartet in G minor, on Sunday afternoon. The new music is written by the composers, and it’s performed by ECI faculty. Come hear something entirely new released into the world.
