28 MONTEREY COUNTY WEEKLY JUNE 19-25, 2025 www.montereycountynow.com ART The Westons are photographic royalty, a family that has captured the world and their vision of it with analog cameras for over a century. In a new exhibit, viewers will have a unique opportunity to see images side-by-side from five different photographers, Edward, Brett, Cole, Kim and Zach Weston, spanning four generations of artistic photography. “This is actually the first time we’ve had all four generations, all five people in a show,” Kim Weston says. Instead of dedicating a room for each photographer, the exhibition titled Continuum: Four Generations of Westons displays them in the same space. “I’m really excited about it because it is a family and I don’t want to separate all our visions in different rooms,” he adds. “It’s really important to be able to see my grandfather’s work next to my work next to my son’s work.” Weston wants to highlight the connections that exist between each generation, but also how each branched out to find their own niche. When he started photography, Weston says he followed his grandfather, uncle and father’s footsteps, framing landscapes and abstracts. “You find your own voice, or you find what photography means to you,” he explains of personal artistic development. “And you find that road and you go down it.” Weston’s work is often inspired by painters. He has added color to his black-and-white photographs. “My dad died before I started painting on my work,” Weston says. “I would have loved to have seen his expression.” Edward was a photographic pioneer. Brett was known for his abstract use of negative space. Cole—Kim’s father—used color film. Kim’s son Zach is an artist, and also teaches young photographers. The exhibition is a glimpse into Weston’s first photo book, Growing Up Weston: In the Presence of Women, a book that talks about the family, offering a glimpse into their personal lives, their legacy, their photographic craft and the women who have influenced their work. “It’s basically a story of my life and how, because they are all photographers, their presence guided me and showed me different types of work,” Weston says about the book.
