Thursday, June 19 ORIGIN STORY When John Steinbeck and Ed Ricketts ventured to the Sea of Cortez (aka Gulf of California) in 1940 aboard the Western Flyer, the trip became much more than just two friends on an adventure—their expedition and writings about it helped launch a renaissance of marine biology and science writing and changed the way we see the world. The Pacific Grove Museum of Natural History is hosting experts to speak on the legacy of Steinbeck, Ricketts and the Sea of Cortez: Lisa Josephs, an archivist with the National Steinbeck Center, Sherry Flumerfelt, executive director of the Western Flyer Foundation and Gregor Caillet, a retired professor from Moss Landing Marine Labs. English Ales is pouring for a “happy half-hour” at 5:30pm; talks start at 6pm. [DS] 5:30-7:30pm Thursday, June 19. Bringing an actual baked and flaky treat could prove somewhat disastrous in your lap while distracting those around you. There are a lot of twists and turns and unforeseen conflicts in doing so. It may have the same inspiration for Pacific Repertory Theatre’s production of Waitress though. The play follows Jenna, a waitress stuck in a small town in a loveless marriage with dreams of opening her own pie shop. But an unexpected pregnancy threatens her dream—until she enters a baking contest. Probably best to leave the pie to the professionals this time. After college, she relocated to Kailua on the Island of Oahu, Hawaii, where her art education began in a variety of mediums such as watercolor, acrylics, oil, printmaking and photography. Her work can be seen through Friday, June 20 at the Marjorie Evans Gallery in the Sunset Center (9th and San Carlos, Carmel). Nikou draws inspiration primarily from nature. “My memories from our family’s estate in the tiny city of Rayhan in Central Iran and the lush natural beauty of the Iranian countryside are, without a doubt, in the back of my mind every time I begin a new project,” she wrote in an artist statement. The islands of Hawaii and the rugged coastlines of Monterey Bay have also influenced her application of colors and textures. She also draws inspiration from history, specifically the Qajar dynasty (18th-century Persia), French Impressionism and the Song dynasty in 10th-century China.
