www.montereycountynow.com JUNE 12-18, 2025 MONTEREY COUNTY WEEKLY 39 CHILL For those opting for something other than a glass of wine or a full tasting flight, Scheid Vineyards now offers a spritzer using one of their own wines. “It’s very casual,” says tasting room manager Ralph Romero. “If someone [in a group] doesn’t want to do a full flight, then they’re not just sitting with an empty glass.” The spritzer is two ounces of a red wine topped with two ounces of blood orange-flavored San Pellegrino soda, garnished with an edible dried orange. Romero notices that guests often leave the orange and says he’s disappointed when they don’t finish it. “We wanted something fun and fruity,” he says. The wine that is used to make the spritzer is the 2020 Odd Lot Red—a field blend that’s predominantly Zinfandel. But Romero says that they plan to switch up the wine in the spritzer every two months. For Scheid director of hospitality Stefani Chaney, offering spritzers is strategic to expanding the Greenfield-based winery’s customer base. She acknowledges that fewer people—particularly younger generations—are drinking wine. Alleviating the intimidation, and perhaps snobbiness, of a full wine flight with something fun and bubbly is perfect. Odd Lot Red’s alcohol—14.8 percent—and astringent tannins are toned down nicely by the blood orange and dried orange garnish. The team at Scheid is continuing to experiment with other wines though and this spritzer will change to a new release in July.
