In April, city officials broke ground on the expansion of Glorya Jean Tate Park, and construction continues on new basketball and pickleball courts, playground equipment and other amenities. Shortly after, the city’s Recreation and Cultural Services Department began gathering public input for a future all-inclusive playground for children and adults with mobility limitations. Now, the city’s newest upgraded park is ready to welcome families. Windy Hill Park marks its grand opening with a celebration full of food trucks, live music, face painting and more. The park, geared toward children ages 2-12, features a rope dome, slides, climbing paths and more, with a 12-foot-tall owl play structure as the centerpiece. Bring the kiddos and watch them try the shiny new equipment. [EC] 11am-1pm Saturday, June 7. Windy Hill Park, 3240 De Forest Road, Marina. Free. 8841253, cityofmarina.org. PITCH HIT Monterey Bay FC returns to league play, hosting Lexington FC. The Union have slipped to fifth place in the USL Championship’s Western Conference with a record of 4-4-4. It’s a match they should win, as the visitors are last in the 12-team division. [DF] 7pm Saturday, June 7. Cardinale Stadium, 4111 2nd Ave., Seaside. $22-$61. 324-2560, montereybayfc.com. TRUE ROMANCE Chamber orchestra Espressivo is described as a “small, intense” orchestra, based in Santa Cruz and composed of local musicians. They often can be seen playing as part of the orchestra behind the choral group I Cantori di Carmel. Espressivo is breaking out and making its Monterey debut, under the baton of Daniel Henriks. Titling their program “Romantique” (“Because no one says ‘Romantic’ like the French”), they are planning a rich program of French Romantic works by composers Berlioz, Bizet and Honegger. Que c’est romantique! [PM] 7pm Saturday, June 7. First Presbyterian Church of Monterey, 501 El Dorado St., Monterey. $45/general; $35/senior; $18/ student. info@espressorch.org, espressorch. org. Saturday, June 7- Sunday, June 8 RIDE THE WAVES The Carmel Surfabout is an institution unto itself, a gathering of the local surf community that started in 1980. There are heats for men and women in various age groups, starting with toddlers in the whitewater. (One of the organizers, Sunny Smith, participated in that very first surfabout as a little kid. “I have worked or participated in almost all of them,” she says.) For local surfers, it’s a chance to connect; for spectators, it’s a chance to watch some great rides and other events, like a long-distance paddle race from 11th out to a buoy, down to 4th Avenue, and back. Now hosted by the Monterey County Surfers Foundation, this is the first surfabout since founder Brad Johnson died. Smith says he never wanted the event to be about memorials: “He said, ‘this was about us, right here, right HOT PICKS Friday, June 6 BOATS IN A ROW Five teams set out on a leisurely row from Monterey to Hanalei Bay in... my god—that’s on the island of Kaua’i in Hawaii! That’s 2,800 miles! Now we see why it’s called the World’s Toughest Row-Pacific. There are deadly sharks, stabby swordfish, overly eager submarine captains, swarms of vicious flying fish. Worst of all, water everywhere, but not a drop to drink (except what you carry). The teams from the U.S., UK and Ireland may have a shot. But good luck to the team from landlocked Switzerland. Those Alpine lakes aren’t filled with ravenous giant squid. In all, 33 crews have made the crossing without becoming shark bait. The average time? A full 62 days. So this is a chance to see these rowers off. Note: time and date may change due to weather. [DF] 9am Friday, June 6. Monterey Harbor, Monterey. Free for spectators. worldstoughestrow.com. RISING HARMONIES How to describe the sound of the group Rising Appalachia? It is an amalgamation of music from the American South and Appalachia, with all the international folk influences that flow through those regions, carried forward by the modern songwriting and ethereal harmonies of sisters Leah Song and Chloe Smith. Along with their longtime band, they have traveled the world to perform their original music at such locations as the Telluride Bluegrass Festival, Red Rocks, Preservation Hall and NPR’s Tiny Desk concerts. Be prepared to be lifted up and carried away by their harmonies. [PM] 7pm Friday, June 6. Golden State Theatre, 417 Alvarado St., Monterey. $47-$241. 6491070, goldenstatetheatre.com. Saturday, June 7 CHESS FEST Are you one of those people who play chess on their phone? Or perhaps you played in childhood and barely remember the moves? It’s time to get serious about the chess business. Come and test your skills in a real-life environment. Meet other players and make chess friends (or frenemies). Rapid and Blitz tournaments are open to all chess players, beginner to master. Rapid emphasizes strategic play and calculation, while Blitz requires quick decision-making and intuition. [AP] 9:15am-8:30pm Saturday, June 7. Marina library, 190 Seaside Circle, Marina. Free; registration required. 524-4488, jos.rice@comcast.net, new.uschess.org/marina-chess-festival. LET’S CELEBRATE SALINAS It’s time to celebrate the biggest city in Monterey County and the county seat. Salinas is a vibrant agricultural community with a historic downtown and serves as the industrial center of the region. Organized by the City of Salinas, this is the first Salinas Day event ever; its goal is to celebrate the city’s history, community and beauty. Take advantage of free tours of the first mayor’s house, the Monterey and Salinas Valley Railroad Museum and the National Evil Dead The Musical, starring Chance Freeman as Ash and Michaela Velasco as Annie, is becoming a staple in Paper Wing Theatre’s repertoire. If you like to laugh while blood is squirting abundantly from bodies, this show is for you. SARAH GAUDOIN Mads Tolling won two Grammy Awards for his work as a violinist, violist and composer.
