Thursday, June 5 NEW STANDARD Forget about what you expect to hear when you think “jazz.” The Mads Tolling Trio offers something wildly different. It’s modern, fun and boundary-breaking—but still falls unambiguously within the tradition of jazz. Tolling, a two-time Grammy Award winner, plays electric violin, accompanied by Bruce Forman on guitar and Dan Feiszli on bass. All masterful musicians, they merge their talents for something at once classic and contemporary in this show celebrating the release of the new album, Masters of Jazz, a fittingly fresh take on violin greats. Thursday, June 5- Saturday, June 7 HAIL TO THE KING Ready for another fistful of boomstick? Paper Wing Theatre’s bringing back the groovy Evil Dead The Musical for a bloody good time. Seriously, we didn’t add “bloody” just as a sentence enhancer. As the chainsaw-wielding, supermarket clerk Ash slices through demons, there will be blood, at least the fake kind—and it will get on you, even if you don’t sit in the splash zone. (It washes off, so don’t worry.) Canadian playwright George Reinblatt took all the elements of the 1980s cult classic films starring Bruce Campbell, The Evil Dead, Evil Dead 2 and Army of Darkness, and combined them for an off-Broadway musical that became an instant hit when first staged in 2003. You’ll be saying “What the Fuck was That?” throughout the performance, and not just because of the catchy song of the same name. [EC] 8pm Thursdays-Saturdays, June 5-28. Paper Wing Theatre & Supper Club, 711 Cannery Row, Suite I (upstairs), Monterey. $36. 905-5684, paperwing.com. 30 MONTEREY COUNTY WEEKLY JUNE 5-11, 2025 www.montereycountynow.com ANNE LARSEN Anne Larsen is a photographer with over three decades of experience. Guess who’s got their first mural onsite? Artist Fabian Debora—with the help of youth incarcerated in the facility—created a mural at Juvenile Hall in Salinas. A May 30 ceremony was small but touching, with each young man saying a few words about what this creative experience meant to him. “Butterflies mean freedom,” said one. The mural is an addition to an already impressive little garden where roses and chickens share a sunny yard. Debora is the founder of Homeboy Art Academy in Los Angeles. Through art, he promotes understanding of their roots among justice-impacted youth. “The first thing they took from the Native people was art,” he said at the ceremony on Friday, May 30.
