www.montereycountynow.com APRIL 10-16, 2025 MONTEREY COUNTY WEEKLY 37 MUSIC When it comes to being in a tribute band, the question performers must ask is the obvious one: How exactly does one band pay tribute to another? “We play like we play, but we try to do a good interpretation,” says vocalist and guitarist Pete Hale, one of the two Petes—the other is Pete Delaney—who founded the Pink Floyd tribute band Pete Floyd. The octet, appearing April 11 at the Golden State Theatre, will perform songs mostly from a period that produced some of the band’s most beloved albums (like the 1973 masterpiece Dark Side of the Moon) and songs. “A lot of people like the Syd Barrett era. And then there is pre-Meddle and Atomic Heart Mother and things like that,” Hale says. “We just decided Meddle (1971) to The Wall (1979) is our sweet spot.” The Petes, who both had bands before performing together as Pete Floyd, decided to form a band in 2021 after Delaney floated the idea. “We were both playing Pink Floyd songs anyway,” Hale recalls. “And once in a while, our two bands would headline a gig. Anyway, we were tossing around names and just for fun [Delaney] said, ‘Pete Floyd.’ I thought, ‘that’s great.’ And he said, ‘You want to do it?’” The answer was a firm yes. The Petes formed an eight-person ensemble. Now, in their fourth year performing together, Pete Floyd is one of the premiere Pink Floyd acts in the country. Hale, who grew up in Marin County, first encountered Pink Floyd’s music in something of a roundabout way. “I lived in England for a few years in the ’70s, and I was around when Wish You Were Here (1975) came out. My sister also brought back Dark Side and she was like, ‘Listen to this woman singing.’ It was remarkable.” But it was the guitar that spoke to Hale most directly. “There are certain guys that you key off of, and [Pink Floyd’s David] Gilmore’s one,” Hale observes. Hale is most happy when he recognizes young people in the audience connecting with the music. “You do feel that sort of you’re in the magic when you’re playing it,” Hale elaborates. “Sometimes I just look over at Pete Delaney, you know, the two people up front. We just look at each other and go, ‘How did we do this? You know, this is wonderful.’” Pete Floyd 8pm Friday, April 11.
