36 MONTEREY COUNTY WEEKLY APRIL 10-16, 2025 www.montereycountynow.com ARTS Moving from sound—he was a recording engineer for decades—Robert Feist now emphasizes the visual as a photographer to capture striking images on the Monterey Peninsula and beyond. Some of these are on display in his photo exhibition, Fragments of Light, at the Temple Garage Art Studio in Sand City. Feist’s work alludes to the way photographers capture many of their images: in fractions of a second. But he also sees the images as something beyond the time the shutter opens and closes. “It means these moments of clarity, where we recognize the magic and the magnificence of life—the razor-thin blood blade that the universe is balanced on,” Feist says. “It also means fragments of life, which is also where a lot of the stories come from. They’re these little bits and bits of stories, little pieces of recognition and awareness.” For Feist, taking photographs is about searching, finding and capturing moments that captivate him, how the lights and shadows reflect in the scene, whether that scene is a landscape of the Monterey Bay coast, or a tea kettle on the stove. “I carry a camera with me almost all the time,” he points out. The exhibition has a mix of blackand-white and color images. Feist says he likes this juxtaposition because it makes photographs pop: “It has some dynamics, like music.” Feist brings these dynamics and interplays into the exhibit with his book and his writings. QR codes posted on the walls let viewers obtain more information about each photograph with a quick scan, giving interactivity further dimension. “We wanted to entertain people,” Feist observes, wanting the experience to be more than just looking. Feist is not only allowing music to inform the pattern of the viewer’s eyes, but also the pairing of visual and written expression, or ekphrasis. The book that accompanies his show adds to the dialog. “All creative endeavors come from an unknown source, a muse we’ve never met,” Feist wrote in a short piece available to gallery visitors. This display is part of PhotoCarmel, a month-long photo festival organized by the Center for Photographic Art. The book was released on April 4; Feist signs copies on April 11, and the exhibit is on display through May 2. Robert Feist artist talk and book signing 5-9pm Friday, April 11.
