Thursday, April 10-Saturday, April 19 RHAPSODY ON STAGE They have taken the guitars. All of them. The pianos, too. In fact, the ruling Globalsoft corporation has emptied the world of all musical instruments. This is the future run by an all-powerful oligarchy with Killer Queen as its CEO. But their world is about to be rocked by a rebellious musical group, the Bohemians. When two resistance fighters, Scaramouche and Galileo, join the group, they unleash the freeing power of rock ’n’ roll. “The show is live, dangerous and more than anything else: It rocks,” guitar great Brian May said of the music-filled production We Will Rock You. It is directed by Todd Siff. It is staged by the MPC Theatre Company. The music is written by—you probably guessed by now. Yes, by Queen. [DF] 7pm Thursdays-Saturdays, April 10-19; 2pm Sunday, April 13 and Saturday, April 19. Morgan Stock Stage, Monterey Peninsula College, 980 Fremont St., Monterey. $10-$25. 6451360, mpc.edu. Thursday, April 10 SIT DOWN FOR STANDUP Tom Thakkar fashions himself as a comedian…or is he a criminal? He poses the question on his website, and even includes an alleged quote from his mom: “Tom asked me to borrow $30,000, a gun and a shovel. He’s my favorite comedian!” With such glowing praise from his biggest fan, you will laugh— but whether that laughter is genuine or nervous is an open question. You be the judge when Thakkar brings his show to Carmel for the XYZ Comedy Series. He’s a regular at New York comedy clubs, and has appeared in Comedy Central specials and The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, along with other shows and podcasts. Thakkar’s goofy-but-dark comedy will make you question the type of person you are when you laugh along with him. [EC] 8pm Thursday, April 10. Sunset Cultural Center, San Carlos Street and 9th Avenue, Carmel. $35-$59. 620-2048, sunsetcenter.org. 28 MONTEREY COUNTY WEEKLY APRIL 10-16, 2025 www.montereycountynow.com MANUELLO PAGANELLI Self-taught photographer Manuello Paganelli is showing his works at the Carl Cherry Center for the Arts (at 4th Avenue and Guadalupe Street, Carmel). He got interested in photography in college and, as an admirer of Ansel Adams, Paganelli cold-called him. Adams became his mentor until the master’s death in 1984. In the late 1980s, Cuban-Italian Paganelli was one of the few U.S. photographers allowed to visit Cuba, bringing back fascinating photographs. A walkthrough with the photographer takes place 2-3pm Saturday, April 12. This dynamic exhibit provides new perspectives into Paganelli’s expansive body of work by exploring six distinct geographic regions, bringing together narratives from 40 years of his work. On display until April 26, with gallery hours 11am-4pm Monday-Friday. One of them is the California Landscapes Memorial Exhibition for painter Jeff Daniel Smith, another—It’s All About the Blues—presents work of Carol Parker and Jennifer Anderson. The fascinating world of Will Bullas that attracts the eye, to the world in which animals mimic people. Bullas’ works are satiric; they make fun of human habits and activities, such as skateboarding, dancing or—so many of them— drinking. Bullas lives and creates in Carmel Valley. The opening reception for all three exhibits takes place 4-7pm on Saturday, April 12. The gallery (at Dolores Street between 5th and 6th Avenues, Carmel) is open daily from 10am to 5pm. [AP] Whale, whale, whale. Another annual Whalefest is upon us. That means whales (and marine life in general) will dominate Fisherman’s Wharf in Monterey this weekend. Activities are addressed as much to children as to scientists. Musician-turned-comedian Tom Thakker is “sexy, he’s hilarious, great comedian, he just did Conan [O’Brien] and I heard he has a nice penis,” according to his website.
