SUPPORT LOCAL INDEPENDENT JOURNALISM As regular readers of the paper and Monterey County Now, you likely read the cover story two weeks ago about the amount of federal money that flows into Monterey County. There are wide and deep troughs where $7 billion is deposited annually: it’s used to reimburse doctors of Medicare patients, pays the salaries of military servicemembers, pave the runway at the airport and conduct crop research for the USDA, for example. Last week’s cover story was about a battery storage facility at Moss Landing. It’s an authoritative piece of reporting that details the how and the why of this emerging industry in our backyard. Like the week before, it is an example of local journalism that is tightly interwoven with a national story. It is also the kind of journalism that is underwritten by your friends and neighbors who contribute financially to support Monterey County Weekly and Monterey County Now. This is a select group that we call Weekly Insiders. Since 2020, when we began actively inviting readers to offer their financial support, 3,641 of your friends and neighbors have stepped up. If you are one of that group, as we say in big letters on the preceding page: Thank you. If you have a friend who you think should be an Insider, please give them a nudge. If you haven’t yet become a Weekly Insider, I hope you will join them. This special Thank You section in the paper is the kickoff to our spring appeal. We are looking to get 400 new Weekly Insiders signed up by the end of April. We have a few incentives and a special gift for those who commit to a monthly contribution of $15 or more: Your first month’s contribution will be matched, and we’ll send you a stylish grocery bag made of recycled plastic and emblazoned with the likeness of our very own animal mascot, Squid. It’s a thank you gift where form meets function, and it can be yours for less than the price of a Netflix membership.
