This was before the inauguration of President Trump, and one of my colleagues asked an EPA scientist if he was worried about DOGE; he told us that he was not. He said that a safe environment transcended political lines, noting that people in West Virginia want clean water, just like people in Monterey County want clean air. He told how he started working at the EPA during the George W. Bush administration, then worked under Obama, Trump 1.0, then Biden. He was clear-eyed and persuasive when he said that the EPA is a lean organization that returns a ton of value to the taxpayers. It saves dollars and lives. So much for that. A month later, in February, Trump backed the new EPA administrator’s plan to cut the agency staff by 65 percent and reverse its own landmark ruling giving it authority to regulate greenhouse gases.
