Thursday, Feb. 20 CUDDLE CALL Feb. 20, it so happens, is National Love Your Pet Day. Local nonprofit Golden Oldies Cat Rescue finds new homes for cats, at least 6 years old, whose guardians are no longer able to care for them and who may not be safe in a shelter. To commemorate the day, Golden Oldies is hosting, in spirit at least, a “Stay Home and Get Cozy” fundraising event that actually takes place in one’s home, or wherever one chooses to spend time with their pet that day. Tickets for the event range from $50-$100 depending on what activity one plans to do with their pet—bake cookies, do yoga, etc.—but for those who just want to cuddle, the range is $5-$5,000. Entrants will also be included in a drawing for prizes and are welcome to email photos of themselves with their pets. Because no matter their age, every cat deserves a good home and some time in the limelight—just ask any cat and they’ll tell you: their greatness is wildly underappreciated. [DS] All day Thursday, Feb. 20. Location is up to participants. $50- $100. 200-9232, info@gocatrescue.org, gocatrescue.org/ stay-home. TRASH TALK What happens when notions of glamour—take it to the extreme, with models strutting down a runway— meet, well, trash? Trashion is always novel, even if the concept is tried and true. It’s fun, it’s innovative and it provides a road map to sustainability. (Forget fast fashion, make wearable garbage into something stylish.) This Alliance on Aging benefit event has a reputation for being fun, even outrageous, by putting creative trashion on the runway. Attendees also get the feel-good boost of benefiting this senior-serving nonprofit, which is always innovating on how to meet the needs of this community. Look no further than a new Memory Cafe launching on Feb. 25 (see more, p. 4). This show is a chance to ooh and aah and laugh, taking your mind off of the more serious work the Alliance is doing daily. [SR] 11:30am Thursday, Feb. 20. Salinas Valley Fairgrounds, Orradre Building, 625 Division St., King City. $80; $90/runway. 655-7564, allianceonaging.org. 22 MONTEREY COUNTY WEEKLY FEBRUARY 20-26, 2025 www.montereycountynow.com EMILE NORMAN In 2024, Emile Norman’s four “Casa Munras panels” were removed from storage after spending 40 years in darkness. Since then, the Monterey History and Art Association has developed a cabinet and lighting design for displaying the panel in the Monterey History and Art Museum at Stanton Center. The mixed media pieces include materials such as ceramic, fiber, glass, wood, silk, metal, bone and more. The panels commemorate such important events in local history as the discovery of Monterey Bay by Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo in 1542 and the founding of the Mission San Carlos Borromeo del Rio Carmelo. Norman was a Big Sur artist who died in 2009. The display was installed and the lights turned on for the first time on Feb. 3, and is now viewable for visitors. The display is permanent. The above untitled piece was painted by Ross Moore; other artists exhibited are Sarah Healey, Barbara Kreitman, John Maxon and Gustavo Torres. Moore is known for his urban landscapes, lost somewhere between realism and total abstraction. Initially a watercolorist, Moore eventually turned to oil painting. He creates images both recognizable and completely foreign, streets and vistas that show contemporary urban California, without revealing the location of the place. Billboards, traffic, games of shadows and sun are all there, even if you can’t read a single street sign. On display through March 15. [AP] Trashion is both art and philosophy. It usually goes with a commitment to environmental practices and recycled materials. Some outfits surprise us with their beauty or creativity. For Alliance on Aging, it’s a runway benefit show. MANNY ESPINOZA Carmel Valley Community Chapel hosts Artist Migration for a performance of two beloved sonatas by Brahms and Beethoven. As a bonus, the ticket price is up to you.
