The term dates back to the 1970s, a time when India’s film industry in Mumbai (then called Bombay) started to give Hollywood a run for its money. The movies feature singing, dancing, opulent cultural backgrounds and yes, lots of romance. [AP] 6:30-11pm Saturday, Feb. 15. Monterey Sanatan Women’s Social Club, 786 Hilby Ave., Seaside. $40. eventbrite.com. DEEP BLUE Opry is grand. It’s also old—as in a revered genre of American music. You shouldn’t, but if you need further proof, tune into Laurie Lewis & Kathy Kallick: 50 Years of Song on stage. They are both Grammy winners, and both have earned International Bluegrass Music Association awards. Lewis was named Female Vocalist of the Year. Kalick’s albums chart in the top 10. As far back as 1991 a music critic observed that the pair “invoke with uncanny intensity the spirit and essence of those raw, pioneering recordings.” Sounds great, yeah? So how far will you have to travel to see these two powerhouses? Fortunately not very. Otter Opry brings them to the stage in Monterey. And if you need to fortify yourself for their performance, there’s dinner beforehand for an additional $17.50. [DF] 7pm Saturday, Feb. 15. Monterey United Methodist Church, 1 Soledad Drive, Monterey. $35; $30/California Bluegrass Association members; free/15 and under. 375-8285, otteropry.org. NEMO DRAMA If there’s one movie that brought the underwater world to life, crossed the children-adult movie barrier and made the world fall in love with clownfish (if not the voice of Ellen DeGeneres as the blue tang fish named Dory), it’s the Pixar-Disney animated 2003 film Finding Nemo. Loved by many, it tells the story of a clown fish father named Marlin on a quest to find his son across the vast ocean, making friends along a heartwarming yet treacherous journey. Now, the Pacific Repertory Theatre is bringing this beloved story to the stage with a musical adaptation, Finding Nemo JR, directed and choreographed by Corrine Agro. Performances at the Golden Bough Theatre will continue on Friday and Saturday nights at 7:30pm, with matinees on Saturdays and Sundays, through March 2. [KR] 7:30pm Friday and Saturday, Feb. 14-15; 2pm Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 15-16. Golden Bough Playhouse, Monte Verde Street between 8th and 9th avenues, Carmel. $11- $28. 622-0100, pacrep.org. SOMETHING SPECIAL Having poetry, jazz and burlesque under one roof is special. It’s even more special when the roof is that of California’s First Theatre in Monterey. But you want to know what will make it even more special? Sharing the evening with someone special. It’s a trifecta presented by the Monterey State Historic Park Association, curated by Monterey County’s Poet Laureate Rachelle Escamilla. Passion & Rhythm: A Valentine’s Soirée features performances between psychedelic Latin Jazz group Espiritmo with the Carmel Delights Dance Company and others, along with poets including Adela Najarro, Aideed Medina and more. Most importantly, get ready to groove to the latest Bollywood Bollywood vibes for Valentine’s Day? If the exuberance, music, food and flair are your thing, consider joining the Monterey Sanatan Women’s Social Club for a thematic party. SHUTTERSTOCK Dan Frechette and Laurel Thomsen are a folk duo on stage, and also husband and wife off the stage. Their story started on YouTube, where they met.
