At the same time, however, these descriptors indicate the range brewers can give to a single style of beer. At Other Brother Beer Co., the selection of IPAs includes two with a similar pedigree—Roundabouter and X-Ray Roundabouter—that are quite different in appeal. Roundabouter is billed as a hazy and has the look. Resinous and malty on the nose, it offers tingles of spice and pine with a creamy mouthfeel, balanced by an effervescent salinity, hints of fruit and a sweet, malty note. That evergreen forest sensation lingers on the palate, giving the beer a robust feel. While the layered flavors of the former remind one of a winter scene, in its X-Ray form—described as a juicy version—the beer promises more of a tropical setting. Aromas of apricot and green tea beckon. The pleasant fruit continues on the palate, but with an earthy foundation. A gentle spice with a pine needle notion emerges more fully on the finish. Yet the two share similarities. Both are compelling. Despite its lighter body, there is a distinct, creamy feel to the X-Ray. And perhaps that’s to be expected. After all, juicy IPA can be a little hazy at times, as well. The Roundabouter and its cousin are new to the Other Brother menu, alongside others in the IPA genre—two West Coasts and a hazy double.
