36 MONTEREY COUNTY WEEKLY JANUARY 16-22, 2025 www.montereycountynow.com CHILL When temperatures dip, beer cravings take a darker, heavier turn. So a Saturday evening with a chocolate stout from Peter B’s Brewpub…nope. Sold out. Well, then—an oatmeal stout stiffened with coffee. Sorry, that tap is dry, too. But one out of three is not bad at all, considering the third option. Peterhosen is a märzen lager that Peter B’s brewmaster Natalie Mika promises is just right for winter, despite the style’s association as a festive fall beer. Märzen was traditionally aged through the summer in the chill of cellars. Her reasoning becomes evident on the nose, with its welcoming aromas of honeyed biscuits, malt and dry herbs, balanced by the specter of a looming pine forest. That balance between visions of the warmth of a cabin kitchen and the haunting depth of an untrammeled woods is what made märzen a favorite. And Peter B’s version is light, but not without impact. Each sip reveals a resinous bitter streak and traces of charred coffee and burnt caramel. However, this is eased by the comforting appeal of toasted bread and warm sticky buns covered in crushed almonds. Even its rich amber hue tips between golden promise and foreshadowed gloom. And with all of that, Peterhosen is still a lager. Even with a lot happening on the palate, the flavors are subtle, with a clean finish that leaves you ready for the next sip. So, yes, there may be demand for heartier beers this time of year. But a lager with some body to it is equal to the season, as well. Peter B’s Brewpub, 2 Portola Plaza, Monterey.
