The fictional dramatization of Big Little Lies aside, this is a place that entices filmmakers whether they’re making car commercials, music videos, or a TV series starring big names like Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon (see above). This mixer, hosted by the Monterey County Film Commission, is a chance for locals to get in on some of the glamour devoted disproportionately to Hollywood. Join in over light bites and wine with fellow filmmakers, production crew members and other professionals for networking, brainstorming and to raise a glass to the local film scene. Which name rolls off the tongue better? Ian Donald Calvin Euclid, or Dweezil? The son of composer Frank Zappa goes by the latter, a nickname he was given by his father. Dweezil Zappa arrives in Monterey on his national tour that celebrates the 50th anniversary of Frank’s Apostrophe (’) and Roxy & Elsewhere albums. Growing up in the music industry, Dweezil quickly became a powerhouse performer in his own right, releasing his first single at the age of 12. One is Elizabeth Murray’s Rites of Nature-In Kinship with Trees. Murray is an artist, bestselling author, gardener and international creativity teacher, whose work is shown above. “My aim is to create beauty, connect to spirit through nature and inspire others,” the artist wrote in an artist statement. “For decades my passions have included love of trees, oil, watercolor painting, photographing Monet’s gardens, crosscultural spiritual practices and gardening.” Her work has been shown in museums across the U.S. She lives in a historic home and garden in Monterey.
