Monterey County Gives! 2024

DONATE ONLINE MCGIVES.COM EDUCATION & YOUTH 500 kids experience the unique enrichment of being near our beautiful waters. “Being a part of The Wahine Project gave me opportunities that I never believed possible. Who would have thought that a young, Brown girl from East Salinas would be given the chance to surf? Definitely not me. As a child, I always thought that surfing was a sport only people in movies would participate in—it wasn’t something I ever saw people of color doing, it wasn’t a reality for me. You have changed my life, for that I will always be grateful. Thanks for everything!” -Daisy, Alisal High School student WESTERN FLYER FOUNDATION Year Founded: 2016 Paid Staff and Volunteers: 4 paid, 85 volunteers Budget: $1,584,578 220-8047 westernflyer.org BIG IDEA: After an extensive renovation project, the Western Flyer—a historic fishing vessel that took John Steinbeck and Ed Ricketts on a famous voyage to Baja, Mexico—has finally returned to Moss Landing and embarked on its mission in local waters: to help students and scientists explore Monterey Bay while providing a tangible link to our community’s literary and maritime heritage. This ambitious project now enters a new phase of its Big Idea and seeks donations to deliver its distinct blend of scientific and artistic programming, including the Onboard Oceanography Program and the Community Journal Project. “I first stepped aboard the Western Flyer with the goal of fostering a community. On our last day, sitting in the same spot on the aft deck, reflecting on our time together, a feeling of deep gratitude for the community—and for the animals, nature and abundance of life we were surrounded by—washed over me. I walked away with a profound feeling of inspiration and a sense of hope for the future of science, art and the crossroads at which they meet.” -Kaitlyn Ponce WONDER WOOD RANCH Year Founded: 2016 Paid Staff and Volunteers: 6 paid, 45 volunteers Budget: $202,000 235-2234 wonderwoodranch.org BIG IDEA: Youth who have experienced abuse, trafficking or homelessness find new purpose through the equine therapy programs at Wonder Wood Ranch.
