After a dozen-year hiatus, the Hartnell College Foundation has a Big Idea to bring back these theater programs for low-income students. The plan is to bring back two aspects of Young Company in 2025: matinee performances for more than 500 students and SPARK! Supper Camp for students ages 10 to 15. Donations to this Big Idea help resurrect the 39-year-old Young Company and rebuild it for future generations of young thespians. “Young Company at The Western Stage is a program I feel indelibly grateful for. This program instilled a foundational understanding of theater, and also taught me that community is a gift. Theater is the most collaborative of the art forms. Within that collaboration, there must be the intention to have clear communication, patience and a steadfast passion for the art itself. Young Company felt like magic. It was a place to explore my imagination, my artistic skills waiting to be unearthed, and the necessity that is the art of storytelling. I’m lucky to have told many stories at a young, aspiring age.” -Pablo Murillo-Edwards Lyceum of Monterey County Year Founded: 1960 Paid Staff and Volunteers: 14 paid, 350 volunteers Budget: $230,000 372-6098 lyceum.org Big Idea: The Lyceum of Monterey County is behind some of the most challenging educational opportunities available to local students. This means securing longterm sustainability—and that is Greenfield Community Science Workshop’s Big Idea. While funding support for the 2024-2025 school year has been secured from several South County school districts, the goal is to leave no district without joyful visits from the Ciencia en Movimiento. “Given the exceptional feedback from both students and staff, we are eager to schedule more visits. The hands-on presentations of the ScienceMobile resonate with our mission to instill a love for learning and science. We believe more visits would enrich our students’ academic experience and cultivate further interest in STEM fields. We are open to collaborating on any logistical or budgetary considerations to make this happen. The enthusiasm from our students is a testament to the ScienceMobile’s positive influence on their educational journey. We are hopeful for more visits and are grateful for the existing collaboration in igniting our students’ passion for science.” -Jacqueline Ramos, ASES/ELO-P Coordinator at Chualar Union School District spotlight
