68 Monterey County GIVES! 2024 mcgives.com Community & Social Services DONate online mcgives.com Nancy’s Project Year Founded: 1971 Paid Staff and Volunteers: 4 paid, 66 volunteers Budget: $251,224 920-7737 nancysproject.org Big Idea: For decades, Nancy’s Project has delivered food, clothing and household necessities to Monterey County farmworker families. This Big Idea secures nutritious food from grocery partners, provides backpacks and supplies for back-to-school season and gives essentials like diapers, bedding and shoes to people in need. The costs for these necessities are rising, far outpacing farmworkers’ salaries. Donations help this nonprofit continue to do what works: give hardworking families what they need to survive. “I am the principal of Sherwood Elementary School in East Salinas, where students largely come from families of agricultural and other low-income workers. As people of color, our students are frequently overlooked. In July our students were the beneficiaries of the Nancy’s Project shoe giveaway. Their feet were carefully measured and they each got to select a pair of new shoes for school. The atmosphere was celebratory, with bubbles and entertainment. They felt seen and cared for. This event helped give them confidence that they are worthwhile and set them up for success for the school year. Thank you, Nancy’s Project.” -Everardo Marquez National coalition building institute Monterey County (NCBI) Year Founded: 1993 Paid Staff and Volunteers: 2 paid, 20 volunteers Budget: $45,000 231-4052 ncbimonterey.org Big Idea: The National Coalition Building Institute Monterey County seeks donations to support Empowering Leaders to Foster Inclusive Communities, a Big Idea program that teaches conflict resolution strategies. NCBI will conduct these intersectional trainings that empower community members to be effective leaders. Participants will better understand how to take the necessary actions to foster an inclusive environment in our community. These twice-yearly workshops will encourage participants to adopt leadership roles to help address issues like racism and homophobia. “We are unbelievably grateful to the National Coalition Building Institute for their invaluable role this past year in serving as partners in our district-wide initiative toward implementing our cultural proficiency plan. Their team has played an invaluable role in helping us foster a more inclusive, respectful and equitable learning environment at Pacific Grove Unified School District. The many training sessions provided were insightful and engaging, offering practical tools and strategies that have served to empower our teams to better understand and celebrate the diverse backgrounds of our students, families and colleagues. NCBI’s training continues to impact our approach to respecting and valuing the diverse perspectives each person brings to our community.” -Linda Adamson, superintendent of PGUSD Monterey Public Library Friends and Foundation Year Founded: 1999 Paid Staff and Volunteers: 0 paid, 60 volunteers Budget: $160,000 646-5602 investinmpl.org Big Idea: The California History Room of the Monterey Public Library serves as a treasured resource for Monterey Peninsula history. As California’s First City, these priceless photos, documents and books provide essential context to our shared story—but have you visited them? The Monterey Public Library Friends and Foundation’s Big Idea helps fund increased digitization efforts, preserving these artifacts for future generations and making them more accessible, even making it possible to journey through Monterey’s history from the comfort of home. “If you’ve ever been in the Monterey Public Library’s California History Room, you know what treasures it holds. To be able to access these resources from home or office will be a wonderful improvement. In addition, the development of a ‘Memory Lab’ will truly make historians of us all, as we each have our own stories to tell and preserve.” -Kip Hudson spotlight “The result of this effort should be a much safer passageway for anyone during an emergency—and it looks really good too!” -Judy Tschirgi, Fire Safe Council for Monterey County
