With more than 500 unaccompanied homeless women on the Monterey Peninsula, this fund directs money to our region’s housing services networks. Donations go to the areas of highest need at these organizations, helping them do their essential work even better. In addition to providing immediate help to those in need, the Fund also provides scholarships to help women build a brighter future. “After over 20 years on the Monterey Peninsula, my husband Bill and I decided to start the next chapter of our lives in New Mexico. However, our hearts and resources remain there with you—our former neighbors and forever friends. We decided to continue supporting the work of the Fund for Homeless Women—a one-of-a-kind effort, successfully addressing the needs of women who face homelessness in the place we too called ‘paradise.’ We share the Fund’s commitment to the vision that women on the Monterey Peninsula are properly housed and out of danger. We are dedicated to having a positive impact on the lives of women who face dire circumstances; changing the trajectory of their lives today, and in years to come. Regardless of where any of us happen to be, we all have a right to housing and safety. We all deserve to have a place to call home.” -Rev. Michael Reid FUND FOR INDEPENDENT JOURNALISM IN MONTEREY COUNTY Year Founded: 2002 Paid Staff and Volunteers: 0 paid, 14 volunteers Budget: $60,000 394-5656 journalism.montereycountynow.com BIG IDEA: The decline of local newsrooms is well documented. Thanks in part to the direct financial support from readers, Monterey County Weekly and Monterey County Now are a counternarrative—an operation that is persevering and ambitious. With a 10-person newsroom covering communities and issues across Monterey County, in print, online and in a daily newsletter, they seek to utilize the Fund For Independent Journalism to aspire to do even more. Donations to this fiscal sponsor via Monterey County Gives! will allow the Weekly to invest in more investigative reporting. Longform investigations take time and resources, sometimes many months and many dollars. In addition, as a member of the newly formed Monterey County Media Literacy Coalition, the Weekly is increasingly engaged in demonstrating how they report stories and guiding readers on understanding a fast-changing media landscape. “Sometimes reading your journalism pisses me off, some days it makes me laugh out loud, but I always come away knowing more. Keep it up.” -Pat Wilkins 54 Monterey County GIVES! 2024 mcgives.com Preserving the Past ~ Building a Bridge to Our Future SUPPORT YOUR LIBRARY • www.CarmelPublicLibraryFoundation.org Libraries play a crucial role in preserving history for future generations!
