These artist-teachers, also trained in social-emotional learning, help provide an outlet for self-expression and healing in this award-winning program. “Art at Rancho Cielo helps students look inward and express themselves in positive ways through various forms of artistic expression. Donations to this Big Idea help sustain this Carmel institution and its various creative undertakings. “I write today to express my heartfelt gratitude to you and the Carl Cherry Center for the Arts for the tremendous positive impact you have had on my art students. Your annual contest and high school art exhibition, Thinking Out Loud, is such an incredible gift to our community. It is the show we look forward to the most each year. The exhibition always looks incredibly beautiful, entirely professional and is most tastefully hung, I appreciate that teen artists have a place to shine.” -Martha Tonkin, Monterey High School art teacher Carmel Art Association Year Founded: 1927 Paid Staff and Volunteers: 8 paid, 80 volunteers Budget: $940,000 250-3347 carmelart.org Big Idea: Sitting atop Carmel’s highest sand dune, the Carmel Art Association has overlooked this artists’ colony for 97 years. And in that near-century history, this nonprofit has seen its share of downed trees—and power outages that come from the reality of living in this plein air paradise. Thus, the Carmel Art Association’s Big Idea is important behind-thescenes infrastructure: Donations through MCGives! Art Abilities Year Founded: 2022 Paid Staff and Volunteers: 4 paid, 6 volunteers Budget: $150,000 915-4611 artabilities.org Big Idea: Art is for everyone, and art has the power to make everyone feel like an artist. Art Abilities seeks funds to expand its inclusive arts programming for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. This nonprofit showcases its artists at art exhibitions, community events and through collaborative projects, challenging societal perceptions and celebrating diversity of creative people. Donations to this Big Idea help financially stabilize this new program as it embarks on an ambitious multi-year expansion and help Art Abilities reach more people by increasing services to a full-day offering. “Our adult son, Kelly, has been participating in an Art Abilities program in Pacific Grove since July 2022. He looks forward to his weekly class that provides a warm and welcoming setting conducive to creativity. Being with other artists allows him to freely express himself and know that there are no mistakes in art. How cool is that?! He is exposed to a variety of new media and tools and is proud and excited to show us what he’s created. Art Abilities is such a gift to the community, and we are grateful to Ritika Kumar and her staff who open their hearts to and share their talents with our son and others with special needs.” -Yolanda Mitchell spotlight “Art brings joy and healing to everyone who participates.” -Chris Devers, Arts Council for Monterey County
